Vulcher interupted my shoot! Pics.
« on: May 09, 2010, 12:17:50 PM »
SO there I was the other day, wife at work nothing to do so I was enjoying some qt time with the 350. I poped a female grackle at 35 yards and dropped her dead not even a flinch. There were several in the area so I left her there as bait. A male swooped in on the bird feeder about 30 ft out the window and he got it too. 2 for 2 in about 15 minutes not to bad. Was going to be a good day afterall. Well as I am waiting on the others to regain enough courage to come back I noticed a huge shadow go across the back yard. I looked and didnt see anything then he came in. A FREAKING VULCHER! had a wings span of about 7 ft easy. This thing was huge. I grabbe dthe camera and snapped a few pics then ran to the living room and showed the kids what was in the yard they were all going nuts too. We watched it for a few minutes then I set up the camera on the window sill adn turned on the video. There were 2 male grackles that were really not happy to have this big bird in their house adn one was flying over it and hitting it. The other stayed in the tree but was making alot of recket. All the noise from those 2 grackles was crazy. You cant hear it on the video but was alot of noise. Took about 3 mintues of following the one grackle in the scope as he bounced back and forth. Then I finally got a clear shot and he was still long enough to hit him dead center of the chest! You can see him jump up into the tree. The vulcher took off and landed on the neighbors roof for a minute then circled for a few minutes. I went and put the kids to bed then collected my trophies. The 3rd grackle that jumped into the tree was no where to be found. Guess he either ran and died or got picked up and carried away to be vulcher poop. When I recovered the female that the vulcher came down for he had ripped the head off it. lol  The male I took off the feeder still has my bird seed in his mouth. Greedy turd couldent even let it go. Well I hope that seed was good cause it cost him.

Enjoy the pics and when the video gets done loading I will attach it also.

Nice shooting DJ, and great pix.

We have alot of Turkey Vulchers around here. The kids and I got a chance to see a couple up close, that were eating a road-kill Bob cat. Not scared of us, they stayed close to their meal up on a fence as we slowly drove by only about 20 feet from them.

Two things we learned. As you say, they are HUGE !!!  And they are one of the ugliest birds God ever put on this Earth !!!!  :D

Cool!

I once had apair come to a jackrabbit I dropped up in Fresno. I would have snatched up a cottontail, but I leave the jacks until I'm done shooting, and police 'em up for burial.

Two big vultures landed and one put his foot on the jack and started tearing. The other one wanted a piece, and they started fighting, pecking at one another, and then the rabbit. It was a pretty savage scene and well worth watching.

Always more going on outside when you're hunting!

When I was coyote hunting across the river I called up about 50 Vultures!  (aka Turkey Buzzards)  They readily come to predator calls.

When I skin something and don't want to keep the remainders I take it out to where they roost.  It is gone the next morning. :)

They are UGLY though!  One of the local towns had so many in it that they had to put control measures to keep them out!  I think I know why though, there are some fugly people around there and I think they just feel at home. :D
