Brakes on the move.
« on: May 10, 2010, 10:32:58 AM »
How many times have you tried to figure out what to do to get your AG to shoot those tiny groups??    Only to find yourself up against a wall of seemingly no solution.    Just to give an idea as to how sensitive an AG can be to even the slightest changes, even moving the muzzle brake slightly can/will change the point of impact.   At least mine.     I have brakes on 4 AGs.   2 are the same make and model.    Today I was shooting one that gives very good groups.    However the report is rather sharp.   I decided to move the brake in an attempt to determine if the crack could be changed by moving the brake.    I moved the brake out as far as possible and still be able to fasten it down.     I was surprised to see the pellet impact move about 1.5 inches.   I moved it back and the POI returned to where it had been.    I moved the brake foreward and back with the pellets impact moving as the brake was moved.    I had never thought that moving the brake would result in the POI changing that much.   The impacts stayed in the horizontal,  but moved in the vertical.

I tried the experiment with an  another AG with the same results.  And then a 3rd AG.    Moral of storey?    It may be a good idea to set the brake where you want it ( and leave it there )  then sight in your AG.

That's the basis for many barrel or harmonic tuners, both air gun and firearm. As you move the weight, the vibration pattern changes. Trick is to find the sweet spot and then lock it down.

Yes moving the brake around does change POI. I have several shooters that need the brake in the sweetspot for killing accuracy and some of my shooters can't stand to have a brake on em at all. Ed

remington or winchester cant remember which used to produce the BOSS system I believe it was called that was basicaly just a big adjustable barrel weight (brake) for exactly that purpose... it was all indexed and such so you could tune it for different loads and reindex it when you switched between them

Interesting.  Does the muzzle velocity also vary with the different brake positions?
Thanks.

no it just involve's harmonic's of barrell ,which tweak's acc. in weapon's & the boss system recoil of gun also some, but noise is also worse to shooter & bystander's.
