big cat 1200
« on: May 17, 2010, 11:32:30 AM »
I have a new big cat 1200.My question is ever so often this thing starts craking like a 22 when it goes off.I have tried diffrent pellets and it does it with all them.
It seems to me like it is shooting harder and must be breaking the sound barrier. When it does this there  is also a puff of smoke.I am sooting lead pellet not the raptors that came with it.It is not peredictable when it will happen but does seem to be after a have been shooting awhile. It  may last 2 shoots or it may be several more. The gun has less than 500 shoots through it.Could it be just breaking in?The main problem with this is the shoot is way off when this happens.Any help would be greatly appreaciated THANKS.

i would say you have some excess oil or grease getting by the seal and causing detonation which is bad on a springer type rifle. i am sure some one will speak up that knows more than i . a lot of information and knowledge on here. thanks david

like rocker said it's rough on seal & really your the first I can think of that it's continued doing it to?sound's like seal was bad from get go & letting oil's by into chamber(nothing new about bad seal's from factory my whisper was shot from day one),really you need to see inside & what's going on,can you do home take down? or if new take it back for a new one, cause if it continue's it will break soon.

Scott, a Big Welcome to the GTA forum and family.  Yep, what the above posters said; Looks like some oil/grease is getting into the air chamber and causing detonation.  Most likely the piston seal was damaged during installation at the factory.  Lot's of sharp edges inside the receiver and that's what's caused the cuts on the piston seal.

If you have a spring compressor (You can make one yourself....a few examples in the GTA Library)...you can remove the spring and  piston and check the seal.  If it's cut up or missing bits/chunks....you'll need to replace the seal.  If the air rifle is still under warranty....return it for a new one.

Scott.  Try shooting  heavy pellets in it for a while. This way you can cycle the excess lubes out of the gun without causing any more detonations. Some rifles come "extra juicy"  from the factory!! tjk
