Gave the 350 a night off.
« on: May 17, 2010, 02:25:24 PM »
Well I was a good husband and father this weekend, staying home and getting a lot of yard work and daddy things done. Which left absolutely no time for air gunning, my wife was surprised that I stayed home all weekend and we even made a few trips without an air rifle tagging along. So today when I got of work and had a kitchen pass I grabbed the nearest gun, which happened to the Discovery and headed out. I did make two calls to 2 other forums members to see if they could get out but was unable to get a hold of either of them.

We have another storm moving in tonight so I knew that today maybe it for the week. Tonight’s exercise was all about rapid target acquisition. The birds were super spooky today; I took up a position near the corn pile and used a parked tractor for cover. It took a few shots to get on the board tonight. I must admit I’m a springer guy at heart. Don’t get me wrong, I love shooting the disco, but I miss the recoil of spring guns. After knocking down a few birds I just left them lay and hoped that the other birds would think they were enjoying a fee meal and come in to join them. Once I had 3 or more down the new arrivals wouldn’t stay long, I mean just barely getting their feet down before looking around and the lifeless bodies of their friends and taking flight. So I mean you had to get on target very quickly and get the shot off in a hurry. Most of the birds that did come in left before I could get a shot off. I even passed on a snake that slowly made his way across the feedlot weaving his way in and out of the dead birds. I won’t say I missed as many as I connected on, but I missed my fare share tonight. And I did have a couple of fly offs, but for the most part, most of them just flipped over dead at the shot. I did knock down 3 birds that I couldn’t or didn’t even attempt to recover. I’m to damned be crawling around under or over electric fences. The action was still hot when I had to head for home, I didn’t want to get myself in trouble at home, and dinner was just coming off the stove when I walked in the door. It’s been along time since I got the Discovery out of the gun cabinet but with tonight’s performance it might get a little more trigger time.

Thanks Jeff, I guess I got lucky on the wood on my Discovery. It does have a nice look to it. Like I said in my post, for whatever reason I just don't shoot that gun alot. I need to give it a little more trigger time. I was looking at a few of my bird books this week and it looks like like the Yellow Headed Blackbirds don't get to far east. They really are a pretty bird, just for fun you guys should get online and listen to the call they make. Sounds like rusty door opening and closing, now imagine that sound be made by hundreds of birds at the same time. It gets pretty loud. They are big bird too, the Brownheaded Cowbirds are rather small, smaller than a Starling and they are aptly named, those dang things hit the ground and get right under the cows, offering no shot at all.

Well Dave,

After talking with you on the phone I checked out your post, it looks like I missed out on a good time full of good bird action....But watching the boy park one in right field over everybody's head and tagging three or four runs out at home plate was pretty fun too. We will have to get together and get down there for some hunting soon.

Nice shooting!
