Lathe and Mill Training About Complete..:)
« on: May 03, 2007, 11:32:53 AM »
As you all know I have purchased a lathe and vertical mill.. I have been practicing on both of the machines every day.. Trying new shapes, sizes etc. with delrin, pvc and nylon materials.. Sure is alot cheaper making a mistake on the plastic stuff than on aluminum, or other pricy metals...:) I have got the basics down now and have started making some special ficture tooling. The mill is great for all the angles and bores that need exact tolerances..

Although the plastic materials I have used to make the brakes and shrouds look ok but are not any different than how people look at plastic on there air rifles...:) I know an all plastic shrouds and brakes feel kinda cheesy... hehe.   But I had to experiment with that first before I started on the good stuff..:) I have finished placing my first order of aluminum round bars in variouse O/D.. and have put in my orders for the aluminum tubing I will be using for all the shrouds I will make along with the generic and custom brakes.. Of course I will still have plastic materials available for shrouds and brakes..:) That is for those who do like plastic..

I will be posting some information in the classifieds on cost and availabilty of what I will first be making in a week or so.. My main problem lately has been getting on the internet.. The old satalite is letting me down alot lately and have a guy coming tomorrow to solve the problem, I hope...:)

I love working with my hands with tools.. Have not done that in almost 30 years now.. Good to get the callases back and dirt under my finger nails again... lol..

Good for you Gene!!!

I know how it feels to get dirty again! I used to be a wrench, but upgraded jobs. Now I ride a desk...Which really sucks. It feels good to come home and be able to MAKE something. It's that feeling that you got something DONE. So rewarding!!!

Thats exactly right Paul.... That is why I have been working on fictures for the lath and mill.. When I first got the lathe Bob "CDT" and myself worked on the lathe getting everything trued up for a couple days.. And after that I have been making adjustments to the saddle, chuck and tail stock. Also have added digital readouts. As I performed many different setups and operations, I have found that I needed more tooling in order to do different things....:) The vertical mill was pretty much right on the money. We also went through it and made sure all the settings were in order and made some adjustments as well. Of course I purchased alot of tooling for it as well.. But all in all both the mill and lath are ready to go now..:) Again you are right Paul, about producing a close to perfect part.. If it does not start out right on the money then the end product will not be next to perfect..:)
