What prep and procedure to paint a wooden stock?
« on: May 22, 2010, 12:21:51 PM »
I'm giving some thought to painting the stock of one of my guns. I am thinking it might look good flat or satin (not gloss) black, like a FX. I don't have any air brushes so would it look like hell if I used spray paint after sanding/stripping the varnish off the stock?

Since no one answered here, I'll take a swing at it :-).  First, as long as the current finish is in decent shape, you may not need to strip it.  Just sand it to give it some tooth so the paint has something to hang onto.  Sounds a little odd, but I've had really good luck with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 primer on just about everything.  It seems to bond to just about anything, including glass and plastic.  If you notice any rough spots after priming, sand out with 220 grit paper and apply a second coat of primer.  Sand again with 220, then the color coat of your choice.  Again, multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat, and I like using a white Scotchbrite pad between coats.  As to equipment, you can buy a decent detail gun at any of the Big Box stores, well under the $50 mark IIRC, and well worth the cost.  And if you don't already have a small air compressor, now you have a good excuse :-).  I don't know of any of the spray can paints that will hold up for this application, but maybe there's something available from Brownell's that would do the job: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/Home/default.aspx   Good luck, and keep us posted.  Later.
