Benji 392 peep sight question
« on: May 23, 2010, 01:56:17 AM »
I recently got an extended-billet steroid Benjamin 392 from Tim at Mac-1, and it's amazing.  I should have bought it years ago!

The only issue I have is with the Williams peep:  to get on target I need to max-out the windage adjustment to the right.

So, here are my questions:

   1 - can I remove the screw (screws?) attaching the sight to the receiver and add a spacer to shift the whole sight body right, and regain some of my range of adjustment?

and;

   2 - am I going to mess anything up (inside the receiver) by doing this?  I remember the warnings with my trusty old, 1970's Blue Streak: "Don't remove the little cover on the left side or you'll mess everything up...dummy"
I know the sight is attached to the other side, but it's just screwed into tapped holes, right?

Thanks, folks,
-JC

I recently bought a 392 that shot completely outside the range of adjustment of the stock sight.  I took the Williams sight off of my 397 and installed it on the 392 and the rifle shot outside the range of adjustment of the peep sight too.  I concluded that something was grossly out of whack and returned my rifle for a refund and ordered a refurb for $99.99 and it shoots straight!  My 397 with the peep sight is like a laser death ray!  You may be able to correct it by doing what you suggested in shimming the sights but for the amount of money you spent the rifle should be perfect not rigged to offset an underlying problem.

I agree, it should be right, out of the box.  But I think this is a pretty simple fix.  I'm going to try using a nylon spacer to move the sight body.

Glad you got yours sorted out :)  And I agree, the Benji pumpers are super sweet when you get them sighted in!

Thanks,

If you have the sight adjusted all the way to the right then it will take a fairly thick shim to move the sight body enough to center the aperture above the centerline of the sight body.  The aperture will still be located in the same place relative to the receiver just now the sight body will be further to the right.  My rifle was so off it felt like I was looking down the side of the barrel.  I didn't find the condition of my plain ol' 392 acceptable and I surely wouldn't find the same condition of a costly custom rifle acceptable, but that's just me.

You're right, it would have to be moved roughly 1/4" to the right to center the sight in the adjustment range.
I took the Williams peep off last night, no problems, but I see the screws are very short.  I would need to replace them with some longer screws from the hardware store to use any shims/spacers at all.

That's disappointing.  I think I'm going to have to ask Mac-1 to look it over again...
Man, that's a long way to ship (Indiana to California).
