This document lists all of the critters in NYS and there legal status.

The official DEC website lists only a few of the unprotected species. This document lists them all. It's currently being updated to include amphibians and reptiles which will become protected.

Just quickly looked through it and I was surprised that I could not find Starlings listed - either in with "Black Birds", or seperately as was done with "House Sparrows".

And, I was also surprised to see that Grackles are protected in NYS.

Never mind, found them.  Listed under "Starlings"  of all places,... and I thought they were in the Black Bird family - oh duh !!!! :D

Did you see the whales listed as unprotected?  I think I will go Killer-Whale hunting next :)  Are they kidding me?!?

Great link (!) but there were no surprises there for me.  All the rodents were listed as unprotected as I expected and the G-hogs were part of that group.  All the voles, moles and mice, rats, etc. unprotected, and a few others which I will never encounter.  I was mostly looking at mammals and did not find anything in it that I was interested in, or any unprotected ones that I have spotted or ever will.. I don't even have any red squirrels around here.  Do we really have all those animals and birds on that list in NY state?

I also think if you don't see something listed, you can take it.. like a wild pig or all those Mountain Lions that people are always spotting.

Actually you'll note that the whales are protected under federal law so NYS wouldn't impose regulations of their own. That would be like Arizona passing their own immigration law.

Now that I'd like to see - do ya think the Condor's up to it ??? :D

Interesting what they list and what they leave out. As far as I know, there are no Killer Whales anywhere near NY waters, but I have seen a Mountain Lion not far from here.
