Pest Control Opportunity-foxes
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:52:47 AM »
I have a pest control opportunity-six foxes terrorizing a neighborhood.  Do you think my RWS 350 can take them out?  Of course I'd only shoot if I had a clear head shot.  I can use it or my bow, but I don't know if I'm a good enough bow shot to hit a fox.

if you can get them within 20-25 yards and that gun is .22 and shoots at least 800-850 fps i would say you can use thr AG.

it would be hard to get a bow drawn with a fox anywhere near you, they pick up on the slightest movement.

Forget the movement, their hearing is unparalleled by any animal in North America.  You will have to get a good spot and wait for them concealed and be downwind.

A 350 .22 will have no issues taking a fox inside 30 or even 35yds if you are really good with a Magnum Springer.  Timmy and others have taken Fox with "less gun" than that.  There are also a couple of videos on youtube of a guy taking 2 or 3 foxes with his 19-20fpe Diana 52 (or 54) .22cal.

The problem is the fox staying long enough for you to take a shot before it hears you, smells you, or sees you.  It took me 2 seasons before I can finally get one and I was up on the 2nd floor 23yds away the first year, and 18.5yds the 2nd.  But it was no problem getting several raccoons and possums.  They have super hearing.  Even the one I got, I think she was aware of my presense but was too hungry and could not resist the chicken bones and legs which still had meat and lots of fat on them.  I just got lucky.  Whole chicken leftovers is your best bet to bring them in but that will also invite all the other night critters.  However, once the fox finds the bait site, it will dominate it over time and return often, so you will eventually get less of the other visitors but it will take some time.  If you got lots of time to devote after sundown, you will probably get a fox within a year or two :)

350 will be just fine for fox
headshot only under 35 yards
toast

i have taken at least 6 with my bow all under 25 yards
Stealth is the key
i predator call using a bow alot its fun and challenging but for the 6 i got with my bow i drew down on prolly 15 or more
either wind busted me or i missed or something

Hey Josh, don't be afraid to post pics of the foxes you got with your bow :)  I always wonder how people shoot them with a bow.  Do you have the area all lit up or do you hunt during the day?  I am thinking of getting a bow but want to find out about the methods of hunting with them first.

A YEAR OR TWO!  I'm sure if they are as thick as this lady says it won't take that long. :)  Besides I also have my coyote calls, camo, and decoys I can use on the fox menace.  She says there are six of them in the same area.  What that says to me is there are also coyotes in the more rural areas surrounding them.  Foxes have been driven into the burbs by coyotes.

On the other hand I'd hate to challenge a veteran hunter's knowledge.  I've gone to two predator hunting clinics this year and feel really confident in my abilities to take them if I can locate them.  My main issue now is time with so much going on at work and vacation time coming around.

Hopefully I will make you all jealous of my Kansas hunting exploits!  Prairie Dogs, rabbits, and coyotes look out!  No limit!  I'm taking the air guns, the .223, and the Berretta 12 gauge (for close range coyotes).  I'm doing the most practice with the 350, but I'm so stoked about my TF 99's accuracy it will probably go as well.  The gurls (really my daughters and my wife, not my gurlish son in laws) like the Whisper so it will go along too.  I'm going in just a few days. I feel like a kid at Christmas!

If I had the opportunity & would set up a bait pile & blind &
mix it up, take some with your bow & your pellet riffle I belive it
has plenty of punch for a head shot.
I Have always wanted to take a coyote with my Mathews but never
had the opportunity yet.

o have shot them in both day and night
in day time just set up and call like i do at night just no lights
at night i have a tripod light and wait till i see them coming in using my night vision monocular once i spot them i get ready with bot and then hit the lamp i have to act quick cause they stop to see what the light is befor they bolt
thats the instant to hit the realase
during day i use camo and a ground blind or bruch pile or my camo rain umbrella thing that also doubles as a front blind

i dont have pics as i just got a digital camera last year and didnt do much hunting due to have my 2 boys too little to go with me'
but this season is all new and the boys are going to be hunting with me
ill try to get something to show yall with the bow

if you get a bow be prepared cause they are addictive lol
trust me i know
bow hunting is just as fun as airgunning
you need stealth , accuracy, determination, and patience to get in close and wait for the right shot
this year i only plan to hunt with bows and airguns
going to be a Great season for me
infact i have a fat chuck at my inlaws thats going to get an arrow soon as the garden is going in soon
ill post pics of that beast for yall
