quieting a Trail NP XL
« on: May 27, 2010, 06:08:36 PM »
I got an NP XL a few months ago and other than installing a GRT III trigger, the gun is bone stock. love it now that the junk original trigger is gone but I was wondering if there is a way to lessen the noise it makes without investing a lot of money. i can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the barrel end cap, much less the shroud. i have a chrony on order so i don't know pellet speed yet,  but it is super accurate with Crossman 14.3 Premiers. HELP!!!
Jerry.

I removed my end cap using an allen wrench. I forget which size, just stick one in until you get the correct fit. Do not use one too small as it could disfigure the plastic and possibly lead to pellet clipping.

My XL is very, very quiet. In fact I was just noticing that again last night as I was plinking rather late and it was just so darn quiet. Maybe you still have a little excess dieseling going on? Last night I was putting the hurt on a golf ball which made no sound as the pellet smacked it around. I do get a lot of noise when I plink metal or wood targets or other targets that make a loud 'smack' and for awhile I thought part of the noise was the gun report. But that golf ball didn't make any noise and the gun hardly was too. I wish I had a db meter.

Welcome Jerry,

It's a 1/4 inch Allen key.

Like wahoowad's I don't consider my XL loud. Seems to me to be about as loud as moderately clapping my hands together.  Shooting at old plastic pill bottles out at 35 yards, the pellet strick is as loud back where I'm standing as the gun.

The gun was a bit louder for the first few hunderd pellets as it was burning off lube.

And, depending on where your standing when you shoot it, it can seem louder. If I shoot it upstairs in the long, narrow hallway, it seems twice as loud as outdoors.

Let us know what you find out.

Paul.

I have a Remington NPSS same barrel type and it appears to be removable with a allen wrench if you look close/ good lighting in the end of the barel you can see the hex shape, I have just recieved an email from Crosman which I had requested a exploded parts view. I just made the request late last night talk about fast service I'm impressed ! Anyway I  am tooking to see what is build is, for possible modification, the nitro piston models boast 70% quieter but personally I dont think its that quite either, at least my Remington NPSS isn't, but then again I dont have alot to compare it to other than the Remington Vantage I had for a few days, prior to the NPSS,

I'm still too new to the airguns I dont have a good comparison I hope it gets quiter as it breaks in, I wanted the Trail NP XL, 95% of all the reviews I read were positive I loved the look and wanted a nice wooden stock,  and the lower recoil nitro piston I was sold, right before I pressed the buy button reading one last detailed review which was mostly all positive the guy stated 2 dislikes were the origin of manufacturing US made vs China and the lousy trigger adjustablity using his ecxperinces with the Remi NPSS as a comparison,  Well after reading all the post in GTA about trigger importnace I did a 360 and went with the Remi NPSS,

I would rather have a nice wood stock vs this composite but as that guy said the trigger on my is great, adjusted well, smooth in both stages, As to the made in the USA well it says that on the box..although on the owners manual it says Made in the USA with some foreing parts I find that shall we say in the grey area.like a Clinton version of the story, more truthful would be assembled in the USA

Hopefully as both our guns get broken in they will quieten down

It nice to have fun but I would be careful about shooting golf balls. It can be dangerous and a few people have been stung pretty good in the past because of ricochets. Careful.... you might shoot your eye out. :0  :0  :p  :p

JUST TO CORRECT AN APPARENT MISCONCEPTION- I AM QUITE HAPPY WITH MY XL AS IT IS . I HAVE ABOUT 300 ROUNDS THROUGH IT , IT ISN'T DIESELING ANYMORE, AND IT IS A LOT QUIETER THAN IT WAS ORIGINALLY. I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THERE WAS AN EASY WAY TO MAKE A GOOD THING BETTER!.

I just got done shooting the heck out of 2 golf balls. All the rounds seemed to have penetrated and are stuck inside.

I have shot golf balls outto 40 yards and have had the pellets ricochets back at me and just past the side of my head and put a hole in my siding... No more shooting at golf balls. You may be lucky today but tomorrow is a different story...:(

I expected it to ricochet after everything I have read. So I was surprised when there was no ricochetting going on and you could see the rounds inside the golf balls. My reactive targets and resettables and spinners all produce far more ricocchets than I am getting with golf balls. They even seem to be made different than I am used to. My golfing buddy says they are not as hard on the outside anymore and they also are not filled with the rubber bands and rubber center. Now they have a full plastic kind of inside.

Anyway, they are the quietest thing I have shot! Even my cardboard box filled with old catalogs that I hang targets on makes more of a 'smack' than these golf balls.

Maybe a particular brand of golfball is better or softer than others?

Jerry, the XL is a big gun and with it comes a bit of noise. I am affraid you are stuck with it...:) Unless you can make a big muzzle break for it... But I would just leave it alone and just wait and buy a smaller gun or PCP with Shroud.

Above you asked how to remove the barrel end cap and I told you. Sorry I let the golfball talk lead the thread astray.
