Custome CFX & Shadow Stocks
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:58:32 AM »
Hi all I know it's been a while but have moved back to my home town & we are still setteling down have also been very busy playing with hunks of wood now that I have use of my fathers workshop again.

First up is my CFX, Now it may look strange to some of you but trust me I have doubled this guns accuracy well almost I only use this gun for target shooting and nothing more, It's made from a NZ Native wood called Macrocarpa & is a medium weight wood but quite strong & also don't empty the wallet to buy.
Second up is my Shadow 1000 now this baby is for what ever I want a bit of target shooting or stopping small furry animals due to it's mass of power I have it shooting at over 1000 fps now & I like it and due to the stock i hit what I am aiming at, It is made from another NZ Native called Rimu allso a medium weight wood that is a tad soft but very strong but this wood is like know other & will empty the wallet.

That's some nice work Sean. I like the trigger gaurd being left wood, it leaves a real nice rest for your finger. I am about to start on a stock for my S1K. I had to see if I could do it so I practiced on my B-3 and a 2x6. hehe It turned out ok for what I started with, I also left the gaurd wood.

I am in envy of both Sean and Mike's stocks. I wish I had the hmm design gene in me. If someone shows me a picture I can copy it pretty good. But coming up with my own idea as far as how to do something like you fella's have done is a whole different ball game. I think ya'll have done one hell of a job on your stocks they look absolutely fantastic.

Glad you made it back Sean.. You never fail to surprise me weather it be hunting or your talents in wood work....:) I totally love the CFX stock. It came out perfect buddy.. I assume the ergonomics of the shape is what has improved your comfort zone for target shooting accuracy.. The butt plate to the front of the CFX stock is well planned and thought out.. Looks well ballanced as well.

Also love the S1K stock as well....:) How much shorter is the new custom stock than the synthetic stock? Looks to be a tad shorter.. So I guess you are gonna have orders comin out the yahoooo now that you have posted these works of art...:)

Thanks for sharing with us buddy..:)

Ya I have a few people wanting them now lol could be a job in there I think, Gene The CFX only took me 4 days & the Shadow I knocked out in 3 days did my nephews stock at the same time as the Shadow so I can spit them out quite quickly.
Ummm The Shadow stock is a bit longer than the synthetic  one but for a few reasons.
For anybody thats going to attempt a stock for either of these guns just take your time because the Inletting can be a real bugger of a job infact the Shadow was the hardest to get done every cut has to be down to the last mm the same & then some really it's not so much the inletting but getting the gun to cock & the shadow barrel pulls down real low when you cock it this caused me some problems but I beat it in the end.
Now with both guns I dont get that hollow thock sound & they are much more stable I also added a bit more wood to the foreend to lessen the slight jump you get when you fire them.
Every Gamo I buy now I will do my own stock the way I like it & say by by to plastic.

Very unigue Mike... Like the way the butt stock sweeps back and the cheek rest.. I should of sent my B26-2 stock to ya for a stock mod..:) With that stock I assume that the B-3 is a bit more ballanced than with the old stock. Mine seems a bit nose heavy with the standard stock. All n all it is a fantastic stock mod for your B-3 Mike..

I like that cheek peice Mike & the stock design is quite neat  I like it & that wood what is that sorta looks like Cedar ???.
You could do a stock Charlie you just have to take ya time is all I have an advantage my father has been a Joiner for over 55 years and it was hard not to learn a few things along the way & then I have all the right tools and machines How ever I had to prove a point and did the Shadow Stock inletting with a router and all the rest with a spoke shave & a rasp god that was hard on the hands I will do another stock with no power tools soon it's just time & paitents Oh and quite a bit of swearing :).

I wish it was cedar, but it is yellow pine, started life as a 2x6. I'm going to do a couple more in mahogany, cypress and perhaps try a laminate. I made the cheek well and hook on the butt to make it easier to put the gun in the same spot for each shot, it works great and is less that you have to think about.
Charlie you can do it, just take off alittle at a time and do the inletting of the action first.

Hey Mike.. Did you do the inlet of the action with a router or did you do it by eye and hand? I really like the idea of the cheek area.. If it is done right, you will see your sweet spot every time..:) And it looks like you got it right on the spot......

Gene, I used a router witha guide fence and took out just alittle at a time. The cheek well is a hair too far forward, had to move the scope up and it made it alittle tight loading. The hook works good too, I have noticed that if the butt is even 1/4" high or low it will throw your shots way off.mIKE
