Bad guy of the house
« on: May 06, 2007, 10:49:12 AM »

Ok guys here is the deal. We just got back from shopping for groceries. My G/F says hon there are some cowbirds in your shootin range. I got her to accept the fact that the cowbirds are over populated now and they kill off the songbird eggs and take over their nests. So I grab the B26-2 and some tomahawks and head out to the back yard. Well I stop in my tracks in the hallway heading to the back door and see a tree rat heading for the pellet trap. Woohoo first one this year I have seen in my back yard. I kneel down behind the laundry basket we have by the back door take aim at the thing and he is kind of just roaming around the yard. Well he decided to go away from me towards the fence behind the pellet trap which is set at my 30 yard position from my back steps. I was using the laundry basket as a rest and kept the crosshairs on him. He was facing directly away from me so I aimed at the base of his neck and let the tomahawk fly. It did a forward summersault ran 3 feet to the left and dropped. Now Roald knows that from my hallway to about 3 feet from the fence is prolly pushin 45 yards. Anywho G/F says " Oh no you didnt!!!" I said Oh yes I did..... SO anyways I guess I am sleepin with Thor and Sammy tonight(brother and sister dachsunds). I couldnt resist guys I just couldnt. The B26-2 is gettin more and more accurate the more I shoot it. Or maybe thats me thats getting more and more accurate I dunno. Ayways I got the "what for" from the G/F and now I am just kind of sittin here feeling happy, mad and sad at the same time. Happy that I got a 1 shot kill, mad that I have to deal with feminine animal issues, and sad that a fight has to become of it. Me personally I have no problem going to the store and buying a chunk of beef that some dude put a steel bolt through the cows head at the slaughter house so I could get that chunk of meat. Nor does my G/F have a prob with this. She just doesnt like seeing the act I guess. I dunno ... well anyways guys I have a squirrel to go and skin I shall return later on.

Nice shot John, now just explain to the G/F that the squirrel's tear up her feeder's LOL. My wife has learned that I only do selective harvesting, the big three. Dont tear up her feeder's, dont' hord the pretty bird's food and dont run the pretty bird's off. I now have two rabbit's that I give the run of the yard, their babies and some nature is good in the yard, fattin up boy's hehe. Ed

Great story John, I could almost see the images as I read your report.  Good shooting,,, those 26's are sweet shooters aren't they?  Congrats on a fine kill.

Go John,

What a story, what a shot, but no picts ???

You have to show your G/F the book on Squirrels, and that there favorite food in the spring are song bird eggs ! They are one of the largest predators of bird eggs. Then she can see what a Hero you really are, saving her song birds.

My wife had a pet squirrel that came to our back window for cookies, she even bought that buggerits favorite brand, heck I don't get that kind of attention, I just get cookies ! Well this squirrel had over half it's tail missing, and she called it no-tail, and was very happy with the way things were. No-tail had a litter of little basta&ds, when they were old enough, they chewed on her, and drove her off.

The wife wanted me to get those bad squirrels, and I did, but too late for old No-tail. NowI can take anything in the yard that I want, but I still don't get "MY" favorite cookies !

So give it a thought, if my wife could change her feelings toward squirrels, so can yours.

Well thank you Sean. As far as the stealth goes hehe I had to use the laundry basket in the hallway for my rest and I was inside the house about 7 feet. So not really able to hide the report of the B26 in the small hallway considering the G/F was about 6 feet behind me in the kitchen hehe.We have a black plastic tub lid we use as a fence for the back door so the 2 dachsunds cant escape and I felt that if I actually went outside the squirrel would have bailed. SO I dropped to a knee and watched it roam the yard til it gave me the shot. I am still kind of surprised at the distance. I think tomorrow I will bring the 100' tape home from work and do a real measuring of the distance. I might be even more shocked lol.

Sounds like a really nice shot.  Just be thankful that she not a vegetarian.  Mine use to be.  I never killed anything in front of her but I learned its best not tell my hunting stories when shes around.
