G-hog Double Header
« on: June 02, 2010, 05:53:01 PM »
Late this afternoon I decided to finish the day g-hog hunting at the duck farm.  As usual I took my .22 Condor, affectionately know as "the hammer", along with me for the hunt.  Arriving at the farm I parked in my usual spot, loaded a Kodiak into the Condor and headed off to find a target.  I had worked my way around 1/2 the perimeter of the farm when I suddenly saw my first g-hog.  It was a medium sized hog and he had his face stuck inside one of the grain feeders and was filling his face with grain.  The grain feeder he was eating at was out in open in the middle of one of the duck pens, giving the g-hog a good field of vision and to make matters worse I had to cross an open field to get within range.  Moving only when the g-hog had his face inside the grain feeder I crawled across the open field and managed to make my way to a large clump of weeds that was growing right at the edge of the duck pen fencing.  The weeds were high and thick enough to give me good cover and the distance to the g-hog would be 30 yards.  I put the crosshairs on the back of the g-hogs neck and waited for him to take a break from feeding and expose his head.  Didn't take long for him to pull his head out of the feeder to look around and as soon as he did I sent the 21 grain kodiak on it's way.  At the hit the g-hog shuddered a few time then his legs gave out from under him, he hit the ground and just laied there. I reloaded quickly and made my way to the g-hog but a second shot wasn't necessary.  The kodiak hit him directly in the head  :)  I took some pics, placed him in my game pouch and headed off to find another target.

About an hour later, having worked my way to the far end of the farm, I was slowly making my way around a large clump of trees and bushes with a large garbage dumpster located next to the bushes.  As I approached the dumpster, knowing there is a small grassy area on the other side, I slowly peeked around the dumpster and sure enough there was a g-hog busily feeding in the grass.  He hadn't noticed me so I got ready to stick the Condor around the dumpster and take the shot.  Distance to target was only 12 yards so decided to hold 2 mildots high.  I eased the Condor around the dumpster, obtained the g-hog in the scope and fired.  At the hit the g-hog rolled over onto his bag, made a few convulsions and then it was all over.  I took some pics, grabbed my harvest and made my way back to the truck.......

Both g-hogs were almost the same size, one was a little bigger, and they'll each make a fine meal in the future  :)

Hope ya like the pics..........

Nice day of hunting! On top of that it looked like a beautiful day overall!

What range is your Condor sighted in at?  For hunting I've found that 20 yards is a good distance but I could see longer with a powerful gun like the Condor.

Thanks guys, I enjoyed yesterdays hunt even though it was hot enough out to bake a cake  :)

Randy, I have the Condor sighted in right now for 30 yards but with the power of the rifle she's easily capable of kills at much further distances.  When shooting at longer distances I just use the mildots to compensate.  I could've shot this ground hog from further out but I like to try to get in as close as I can as it makes for a better shot and gives me the opportunity to practice my stalking skills.

Now that's what I 'm talking about!!  hehehe

Awsome shooting Jeff and very nice pics!  I keep forgetting how large the duck farm is.  Shooting a Condor accurately off-hand is not easy.

Good to see your Condor back in action.  You should get a bipod just for the pics.  It takes just seconds to put it on and take it off with the thumb screw or tighten it with a dime coin.  I am so used to having a bipod on my Condors that the pics of your gun look unatural at first.  It takes me a little while to get used to a Condor without a bipod :)

Thanks guys  :)

Harry,,, one of these days I may pick up a tripod for the Condor, I guess it would be handy to have.

Maybe instead of a tripod I'll just hire me a combination gun bearer / game carrier  :)

Thanks Gene... glad you liked the hunt  :)
