RWS 34P Pro question
« on: June 10, 2010, 05:59:53 AM »
I am new to air rifles but have been reading threads on GTA for some time. I have been wanting to replace my Crosman pistol that failed, but that's for another day. I purchased a RWS 34 Panther Pro and received it yesterday. It seems like a quality air rifle. This rifle comes without open sights but is supplied with a RWS 3x9 scope. The rifle also has a barrel weight. It is, to my way of thinking, quite barrel-heavy. I have removed the barrel weight and like the feel of the rifle much better. My question -- Is there any reason or benefit for me to replace the weight? Will removing the weight affect the rifle's performance? This may sound like a silly question, but I don't know much about these guns. To me the weight just seems to be a gimmick that looks like a sound suppressor, but I may be wrong.

Thanks.

Hugh

it has to do with barrel harmonics. it will probably shoot better with it or you can always get a smaller one. do you want to sell the one you have now? email me at itsnotom@yahoo.com if you do. i could use it

In my view of this I have had the 34pc and the 350FKpc and I didn't like the weight on it either, it does 2 things here aids in cocking and reduced muzzel climb from recoil but other than that I'm with ya take it off and hide it some where to me it was a waist from the factory puttin a boat anchor out front like that!

That's what I want to hear. Yes, I know that the modes of vibration of the barrel will be different, but what effect will that have on my shooting the furry-tailed pests in my back yard. When I get the scope mounted, I can shoot it with and without the barrel brick and see the effect, if any. Thanks again to you all for the advice.

Yes, your POI will change if you remove the MB. Like Mark stated, it does aid in lessenning barrel rise/movement when fired. One thing you should take into account is that the rifle wouldn't seem front in heavy if you held the rifle with an artillery hold or just alter your normal hold a bit. Stance and posture play a key role as well.  Many folks that get into air guns,...especially with back-ground in "powder-burners", try to use the same techniques they carry over with fire arms. These are two totally different shooting disciplines and what works for one doesn't always work for the other.  If you prefer to remove the MB, then that's cool,....what ever works best for you,....but be very cautious not to damage the crown of that rifle without it's protective MB. Any marring or scratches on the crown, and you can kiss any kind of accuracy and consistancy goodbye! tjk

You can always adjust for POI. I took my heavy steeel MB off and made one from aluminum. Worked for me...:)

Yeah, I thought that if the POI changed, so what. Just adjust the scope. I like it without the MB. So do you think that I'll run into any problems with the MB removed?

Any time you change the harmonics on a barrel it will effect the POI.So for example:Either or with MB or no MB your POI will change. If you put anything on the barrel it will change things.

Thomas is right about protecting your crown.. You should have something there to protect it. Like Thomas I have something on every gun Ishoot to protet the crown.
