Gamo sight question
« on: May 13, 2007, 03:59:44 PM »
On my new Gamo Hiunter 440 the rear signt needs so much adjustment to the right and up to get on target that it bothers me to look down the top of the gun. Is it bend the barrel time and how do you accomplish this task? Is there a rear sight that will fit on the grooved top strap? Has anyone ever taken the signt off and moved it up as a unit? Mine is so far up that the screw is not catching the spring with much grunt and so the adjustment wheel will turn if you are not careful. I am weeding out the scopes that will not hold zero, hope I end up with one or two when I am done. In the meantime. out to 25 yards or so the iron sights are not all that bad and much quicker than a scope to get on targer, especially running jacks and dodging ground squirrels.

Bob, is this a new Gamo Hunter 440? I assume the barrel has droop..:) Fix has the fix..:) No pun intended Fix...:) And I am sure that you would have to be very careful when straightening a barrel like Fix said.. I have seen CDT's barrel straightener which he designed years ago when he tuned alot of Chinese guns.. It is quite the contraption...:) But very efficient. And a press will work just as good also.

Good luck with your barrel Bob

Bob, not sure if this makes you feel any better or not but my 440 Hunter is the same way.  Then I took the rear sight off you could see where they drilled the front pin mounting hole (where the pin on the sight sits in) off to the right so when the rear sight is installed it’s cocked a bit.  For the height adjustment check, I then took a 4 foot straight edge and set it on top the scope mount rail with the end of the straight edge even with the back of the scope mount and when parallel with the barrel the back end of the straight edge was raised about 1/8 inch so that is why your using up all the height adjustment.  I too like the iron sights so I though about putting some strips of 35mm film negative under the rear sight to raise it up.  The Hunter shoots great for me as I can put all shots inside a quarter at 20 yards free standing, so sending it back to Gamo was not an option for me.

Try one of CDT GRT III triggers it’s a dream….

Good luck, Tom

Thanks for all the input. If it is a sight question/issue, then the barrel is OK. If the barrel is off, not strait to the reciever, then you can only have a scope be on zero at one distance, even if you line the barrel up with the iron sights, as the scope mount rib must also be strait to the barrel. will not buy another gun that I do not test before I send it to CDT, I have more in the tune and trigger than I paid for the gun!! Great advice from the forum as usual!!

Bob that’s why if and when I decide to mount a scope it will need the B-Square adjustable one-piece mount. It adjust all directions including tilt to keep the rings from damaging the scope

A couple of things:

1) You can shim the sight up with some thin metal stock (like a layer or two of soda can metal!). Since the elevation knob threads into the sight itself (and not into the breach), this works just fine.

2) Make sure the front sight is straight up and down. If it's leaning over to the right, that'll force you to move the windage adjustment to the right.

The 440 rear sight is really sub-par. The one on the Shadow/220 is really a better sight, but unfortunately they don't interchange.
