hunting while sleeping
« on: May 16, 2007, 04:40:53 PM »
I have had one ground squirrel that is destroying trees right and left. Open a window or door and off he goes but I brought out my 14 gauge, that is I baited a wire HavaHeart trap with bird seed and put in our in the yard under the bird feeder. Went to bed and got up this morning to one "squirrel in a trap". I CFX'd him in the head through one of the openings and that was it. Also got a good spine shot on a huge jack this afternoon but the lack of a second shot let him scoot and drag off and I could not find him. Hate to have anything die that way but desert jacks in our area are at the limit of a .177 at 950FPS. I saw fur fly, had a blood trail for 10 yards and he was dragging a bit but moving fast. You cannot sit and wait for them to bleed out as they will run till they die. Since Gene has not offered to sell his FX Cyclone cheap, I may have to break down some day and get myself a multishot in .22!!

Hay Bob,

You sure out smarted that bushy tail, no more bird seed for him !

You know I have hade three Have a heart traps, and have never caught my intended pest, caught my cat once, and I don't think he ever forgave me . ;) Raccoons would walk in and stretch out there bodies, when the trap closed there butts stopped it from locking, after they ate the bate, they would back out. So I set a switch set up on the trap, to ring a buzzer in the house when it closed half way, then I would come out and shoot it after it backed out. At one time we had so many they would fight over our trash cans, and the animal control put out warnings about the disease that they found them carrying, a danger to our pets. Now I rarely see owe, with there population under control they keep in there one territories.

Shame that Jack Rabbit got away on ya, do you eat them ??

Jacks and Yotes

I personally do not eat jacks as they have a strong flavor and are tough. I have a "coyote feeding station" set up next to the house were I leave anything that needs eating and they come by every night to check it out for what is on the menu. You can watch from my front and back porch as the coyotes chase the rabbits and jacks as a pack. One goes out in front and works the prey until tired, then the next yote takes over. They work the prey in a big circle with the rest of the pack in the middle. When the target gets too pooped to outrun the completion, the pack comes in to share the meal. They make so much noise at that point that it will wake you up!! I think there is a special yote noise for poodles and fluffy cats!! I have seen them snatch a bird out of the air (quail fly very low and dove are dumb dumb dumb). Our coyotes are huge this year and very healthy. Too bad I cannot shoot .223 in town as I could call in a sun dog a day for a year and shoot them right off my porch. I may start carrying a camera to get a picture to post of the local talent.
