Scrap lumber bench
« on: May 24, 2007, 07:24:49 AM »
Today I whipped up a quick shooting bench and figured I share it.

Only 6 pieces of scrap wood.

Chuck,

Nice looking bench you have built. How about posting some more information about it. Such as size and weight and how hard it is to move around and how hard it was to build. How do you sit on it to shoot ?

Awesome idea! Shouldn't the black board be mounted the long way? In the same direction of the seat?

Hey Charles, that bench is very nice.. It is a simple design and great idea. I assume you are right handed and rest your left forearm on the left side of top..:) Guess gun is just sitting accross the board for a pic..

OH! I counted 7 pieces to the bench not counting the pellet rest..:) I would need an 18X2" board for the seat cause my butt is so big.. hehe...... Also maybe a couple 4X4" supports.. :)

Thanks for sharing with us.

When I made this I didn’t use a tape measure at all. I just took a long board and set it up beside a picnic table and eyed it up then started cutting.

Took longer to paint it then to make it.

Anyway here are the board’s sizes all out of 2x6” lumber.

20” with a corner cut off - top
42” with a 30 degree cut on each end – side leg top support
23” with a 30 degree cut on each end – leg
16” square cut – leg
19” square cut – seat
15” square cut – seat brace support

Some glue and 2 ½” drywall screws

I cut a groove for the seat in the side support but this is not needed at all.

Weight is 23 pounds and I carry it by the pellet tray.

You could easily make this out of 1 x lumber and cut the weight in half.

Remember this was just something I whipped out of scrap lumber I had setting around and not much thought went into it but it works very well.

Shadow

This looks like a classic to me.  Am trying to commission one with a bit larger shooting surface, made with treated pine for outdoor use, and benches on both right and left - either for a friend to watch from or a lefty to shoot from.  Wonder if there would be room under for a gun rack, too?

Hey Chucky, Tim here!  Scrap wood? Whipped up? Ok scrap wood maybe. ( I build houses) Whipped up? NO WAY! You spent some time on that bench for shure! You can not fool me!! Nice work!! I have been looking for shooting bench designs for some time. Gene has built a couple of nice ones very cost effectivly.  A good design for a shooting bench is high on my priority list. Maybe we could have a meetings of the minds?? "Shoot" me a mail if you get time,, Tim.

Gret design Chucky! At the Air Rifle Shoot at my house last week it was obvious that most folks cannot hit a 1/2 hole in the face of a field target at 10 yards (offhand). To have a good time and save the targets from being shot to bits, you need to have a way to sit and shoot. I am too hold to sit on the ground over and over again. A three leg design that has a gun rest, pellet shelf and simple carry handle is what we need. Hey Tim, we may tempt you yet into another design.

Now we just need a cupholder on the weak hand side for your beer, soda, water, sports drink, coffee, etc. I'm serious. I love my caffeine and I drink a lot of water during warm weather.
