Sucky Sunday bird hunt.
« on: May 28, 2007, 04:31:19 AM »
Yesterday my wife & I decide to go out for breakfast. As her and my daughter were getting ready, I slipped my shooting box and my Talon SS into the trunk of the car cause I KNEW she wanted to go to her parents house after.

Well, I was right! After we were done with breakfast, we head up onto the hill to her parents. Shortly after we get there, I unpack my stuff and set up in the back yard. To my amazmant, there are what seemed like HUNDREDS of English Sparrows in the fruit trees, along with a handfull of starlings and 2-3 Crows. I was excited as all get out to see that!

Well, after waiting for a few to come into range or for a proper back stop... I take aim at the first one. He's nice and still in the reticle. Squeeeeeze and just as the sear released, it flew off.  Dang it!  change spots. AH! A Crow!!!  And he's tearing up the apricots! Take aim, finger the trigger, and whoosh... Just as I get to the second stage another crow spots me and "CAWCAWCAW"...The both fly off. I'm gettin a little mad now.....

Back to my old spot... Nothing, stalk around for a while... Nothing. After and hours worth of waiting & stalking. ZIP, ZILCH, NADA. SO I pack my stuff back into the trunk of the car. When I get back....Low and Behold. a flock is back.  This time I just sat there sippin a beer & watchin em. Walking through the trees and letting them spot me. Maybe they'll get used to me being there so I can come back next week a pop a few.

The only thing I got to pop yesterday was the caps off of 3 beers. Just wasn't my day. Hopefully the wife'll wanna head up there again today. This time I'll bring a couple grenades!

Hi Sam,

Sounds like a target rich environment, but nothing to shoot !

Those crows are a smart bunch, and when they caw, all he other critters hide out. ;-(

I wish you better luck today buddy, and keep your pellets environment :)

Oh, it DEFINITLY is a traget rich environment Bill! Last year me & my brother-in-law trapped & disposed of over 500 Starlings. Shooting didn't really seem to hurt the numbers very much. This year, not many starlings around.

It's my father-in-law's fruit tree orchard, he raises & sells fruit at the farmers market for extra income. He's got plums, peaches, apricots, apples, oranges, lemons figs and a small watermelon patch, all in different stages of maturity now. There's ALWAYS something there to shoot. I haven't been out there much lately 'cause of work. But he keeps calling me over. Last year the starlings hurt his crop so bad that there wasn't any fruit to sell.

I tried over & over again to get a Permit from the BLM for a "Nuissance Pest Elimintaion"  for this big Buck that kept destroying the trees. But they kept saying No. Not proud to admit it, but he was teating the trees up so bad I had to get rid of him. The next door neighbor helped by providing me with his bow & a few arrows so long as I split the meat with him!

The best day at work has nothing compared to the worst day out shooting. I know where I would rather be.

Same here!

Reminds me of a saying while I was in the Navy:

"The BEST sea duty is NEVER better than the WORST Shore Duty."

I actually found that kinda wrong... I liked being underway steaming from port to port than being back home.

It definitly does make it fun, but when it KEEPS happening is what torques me. Makes me feel like I'm taking too long for the shot.
