QB-78 repeater
« on: May 31, 2007, 04:31:36 AM »
I recently read at: http://www.qbtune.zoomshare.com/

"Retrofit Magazine?
We are currently working on a retrofit magazine option to turn the QB/XS 7x rifle into a true repeater. Come back soon for more information."

Is there anyone in the USA developing such a magazine?  Sounds great, but are there any negatives to using such a magazine such as loss in power, etc.?

Hi, well I'm still working on it in the UK but it is a project I have to keep putting down as other things come in. I've had 2 prototypes working but they both have the same bad habbit of turning the pellet 180 degrees about 50% of the time.

If you look in the news section there are a couple of updates in there too.

It LOOKS like a rotary may be the answer but that would need machining which was not the original idea.

Still plugging away at it though, with about 5 other ideas and 7 other projects!

By the way, isn't that line subject to copyright ??   ;) :)

Hello Ian:
When you say that some machining may be necessary, do you mean on the magazine, the rifle or both?  If I buy the QB-78 now and you develop a repeater magazine later, would the gun have to be sent to you (USA-UK roundtrip) so the magazine-gun would work OK as a repeater?

Wellllllllllllllllllllll, Thats not what we hoped for but some machining of the rifle would be required for a rotary mag. But between other projects we are working on it, we havent given up on the "bolt it in" option yet. IF we have to go down the machining route then the information would be made available (obviously) for anyone who want ed to DIY or have it done locally.
In the meantime the QB is a great little rifle out of the box. If you get it fettled as well it is a cracker!

QB78 or 79 repeater sounds fun to me..:) That would make it a great smal game hunting rifle in the field. It is light weight and most guys tune the .22's to shoot in the mid 600's all the way up to 800 fps...Keep working on it Ian..:)

I was just looking in my album and came across this picture from when I was thinking of making one.

My version was just a finger operated slide that clipped onto the top of the breach.  Nothing automagical, just something to hold 8-10 pellets so you wouldn't have to keep reaching for the tin.  I think this coule pretty easily be made......hehe, but I don't own a QB anymore:(

It looks right Dan but it certainly turns the pellets over a lot of the time. The most reliable pellets with this type is the Pilerdiver, non-waisted type, they feed ok but at £7 ish for 90 they aint your average plinking pellet!

Ian,

In my opinion, sometimes you have to give a little to get a little ! It's called a trade off ! Give a little, get a little... I wouldn't mind at all.

Yea, I guess it would be pretty easy for the skirt to get caught, or just the nose heaviness of a standard pellet to flip it on the drop.  I guess the only option is a milled down loading port that is just smooth, then push the pellets out of the clip with the probe.  I guess you could do 1 for 1 exchanges...kinda a pain in the rear, and a real pain if I wanted to send you one from Stateside.........whole new breach?  Might be worth it if you could make it a whole automagical deal?

Dan,
It would seem that it is the weight distribution that causes the problems as the torpedo shaped pellets can be made to feed without too much grief. Waisted pellets flip over on the bolt seal but can be improved my mounting the mag at about 60 degrees and spring loading the pellet pile but needs fiddling with the spring loading while the pellets drop. I've had an idea about that and will look at it again when I have some of these other projects completed. It would need minor machining of the bolt and pellet tray but we will see.
Machining, as you say, is a pain and will not make it a drop in option, if machining of the gun was needed then I'd rather install a rotary mag but most sensible indexing ideas need a whole new receiver for the indexing levers to drive the pawls. The cost of producing that would not be ecconomic as it would probably cost more that an AA s410 when completed.

Bill,
I'll accept compromise too but so far I'm not getting enough reliable preformance to offset the short comings. Still plugging away though. I've even got a note pad and pen beside the bed in case inspiration strikes at an inopportune moment. Not needed it yet :(

i am at the moment working on a new breech to use theoben 17 shot mags, with these mag's no pawl is needed as they are clockwork ,  will post more details when it is working. the loading tray will have to be taken off the qb barrel

Yup, you have the right idea, have to mill out the breach and barrel loading tray...that's what Ian and I were trying to avoid...but that may be the only way to keep them consistant.

Hmmm well if we are talking about rotary clips has anyone taken a look at the AA S200 upgrade magazine. They sell a little kit for about 100 US dollars to make the S200 a repeater. From all the pics I have seen of this thing it looks pretty nifty. But without one sittin here in front of me I dont know what the details involved for fitting it to a QB would be. As far as a stand alone kit though it looks pretty nice. Have a look here. I know ya'll have talked about a non machine drop in and I have put some thought into the idea also. One of the ideas I came up with was a a sqaure tube that mounted to the breech and then the bar that would slide through the tube holding the pellets. I did see a problem like Ian is having with the pellet not dropping right but if the feed or drop down passage way was machined in such a way tocarry waisted pellets thats an idea. Or even having a pusher type pin with a somewhat shaped head to guide the pellet down into the pellet trough? I dunno my mind has been goin on and on about this idea till I saw the AAretrofit mag lol.
