I can tell you all now
« on: June 06, 2007, 02:55:19 AM »
that I have it almost working. I have a "new" lathe.
It is a 1948 ish Southbend Heavy 10 now fitted with a 3/4 HP single phase motor, has come with lots of toys and will replace the ML2 that has served so well for so long.
It arrived last week as a kit of parts and has had me running around finding the right bits for over a week now.
I wont be posting any pics as it really should have been re painted but the rebuild process has taken far too long and we had to get it out of the way and installed but I just wanted to tell EVERYBODY!!!!!  :)

Lots of projects Bill. it opens the doors for some decent machining at prices my customers should like.
I'm hoping to be able to do all the machining fof the PCP conversions in house now for a start. It is an ipgrade, from a Myford ML2, a bit like upgrading from a compact car to a bus!

Ian, I am thinking and looking around for maybe another lathe as well. I need something with a longer bed. The one I have does everything I need but just not long enough to expand with. If I had known that I would be wanting to do bigger and better things, I would of bought a larger lathe..:) My mill will do just about anything now that I have the proper tooling. I love how I can tilt the head up to 70 degrees and boy are those vises expensive for a good one.. hehe. I am sure  you know all about how expensive it is for the tooling..:) The machines are cheap compared to some of the fixtures and tooling you need to creat things..:)

Good luck with all you do

Hey Gene, If I'd known then what I Know now.......  :)
Yup agree with both of those. If you are looking for a lathe think about the biggest work it will be asked to do, add a good 15% and that is about the one you need.
Tooling! You will not believe what I've spent on tooling and parts this last 2-3 weeks, makes me cry

LOL Ian, ya, I had no idea that the tooling would exceed the cost of the lathe 4 fold..:) But I am committed now and only want to do better and bigger projects..:) I guess  your imagination is the limit to what you can do. And if the lathe won't do something then the mill usually can do it..:)

One other thing I would say is that it is worth looking for a used light industrial lathe rather than buying a new one from Japan. My Southbend is so powerfull compared to the little Myford, the time it saves will pay for all the extras I've had to buy, eventually!
