So what's the worst gun that
« on: July 05, 2006, 03:16:37 AM »
you have owned in your opinion?  And why??

Mine was the B-4-2 and one of the first guns I bought years ago. Not that it was so terribly bad after it was tuned but the scope mount was something else. Also, the wood on the one that I had was very bad and pretty well dinged up right out of the box. It's probably the ugliest gun I ever owned also and you  sure could tell it was a cheap Chinese gun. It seems that they have improved it though, or so I hear. :D

My absolutely worst gun ever was that refurbed S1k, the 1st one that I sent you to tune.  You might recall, it had a bent barrel, and even Da Tuna couldn't fixt it.  We sent it back for a refund, and got another one that you tuned up nicely.  I shot the defective one a few times before I sent it to you, and it dieseled so bad that it sounded like a 22 rimfire.  It was terrible.  I remember thinking that if Da Tuna could improve this one, then he could walk on water.  LOL.

My second worst gun was a Remington Genesis before Ratite got it to behaving for me.  Even after that, it was a problem due to the RWS 16 mm muzzle brake that I put on it.  The weight of the muzzle brake caused the barrel to not lock up in the same place every time causing vertical groupings.  Removing the RWS muzzle brake has allowed groupings to improve to an acceptable size.  It still has the harshest recoil of any of the rifles that I have, but I am a wimp when it comes to recoil.  Some guys might love the kick it gives you.

As far as Chinese guns are concerned I have a couple, a B-31 and QB-57, that aren't the most accurate in the world and the quality control leaves something to be desired. However, they are a hoot to shoot.  I think they can be improved with a tune and a trigger polishing.

Pistol-wise, the most troublesome gun has been the Webley Hurricane because of the recoil.  It is just very difficult to get a grouping less than 2 inches in diameter at 10 yards.  I got a Webley Tempest more recently that is much more accurate, and so the Hurricane doesn't get shot much.

The Genesis has a problem with barrel lockup, I removed the barrel and pivot block and shimmed the detent spring.

The pivot bushing is what holds the detent in the block, carefull because you can shim it to far and the detent will not go over the lock pin, but this cures the lockup on the Genesis.

Also Jim Maccarri has a tune kit for the Gensis that smooths the rifle out . 49 bucks with free shipping. I installed it in my Genesis and it made a so so rifle decent to shoot.

hmmm.,so many ...maybe the italian breakbarrel pistol,made of zinc aloy,trigger pull was about an inch,groups at 30 feet were 2" across. Maybe the chinese rifle(arow? minuteman?) had a scar in the cylinder where the front screw bracket was spot welded on.After 20 hours work itlooked lots better,but still wouldn't reach 500 fps. I try to forget the real BAD purchases,the one I can't get to shoot well no matter what.

Marksman2004 died after 316 shots, got my money back
CrosmanAutoAirII co2 leaking after about 3000 shots, got my money back
Crosman 1077 the innerair jet hole came off after 2000 shots, got my money back
2nd Crosman 1077 leaking co2 right out of the box, got my money back
Crosman Challenger2000 leaking co2 after after 4137 shots not fixed yet
So i am not too proud of co2 airguns in general and what makes it worst i am not that good at fixing things

Rifle? That's easy - Industry B2-2. Bad groupings, low velocity, and AUTOFIRE when the breach was closed. The safety was more of a suggestion - it made it a little harder to pull the trigger (but not much).

Pistol? Marksman 1010. Shooting pellets? They frequently don't even leave the barrel. BB's? How about >1 foot groupings at 15 feet? Worse than my sub-100fps Daisy 179? You bet!

My Marksman 2004 died after about 1 tin of pellets too. A shame...it was a fun little gun.

Marksman 1010.  I still have it only because it is fairly minty and in the original box. Barely gets a pellet to the target.

Now, I read some bummers here about Crosman 1077's. I've had two (one for me, one for my son). Between the two, they have accouted for at least 100+ ground squirrels, several rabbits, numerous lizards, a passel of starlings, but no partridge in a pear tree. I still have them. Never had any problems with them.

Hello all...
     The worst gun I've ever had ...  About seven years ago , I bought my first hi - performance air rifle from Cabela's. It was a side lever gun with advertised velocities of 1000 f.p.s. in .177 cal. When I got it I was amazed. It was some kind of Chinese made rifle and covered with grease. It must have weighed 10 - 12 lbs. The exterior welding was so bad I was afraid to shoot it. I was disgusted but I sent it back to Cabela's for a complete refund. It was a good lesson learned...

Bob:

Yours is a great question, albeit one that really isn't easy to answer, in the sense that compared to my firearms experience, which has been devoid of grief, my airgun experience has not.  The only airguns I've owned which I would deem to be fully satisfactory out of the box are my pair of R-9's, one of the five M-2004 pistols that I've purchased, and a P-1 pistol.  I've had issues with virtually everything else.

It all started years ago with premature mainspring failure in a .177 Webley Omega.  That was followed with a .20 R-1 that was a dissappointment in the accuracy department compared to similar rifles of the same model and caliber owned by friends and associates.  More recently, I had problems with a Benjamin Legacy wherein the barrel ceased to lock up properly.  Instead of fixing it, Crosman sent me another.  This one fried the piston seal in short order and had other issues.  That got sent back and replaced with a 397 Benji that I put 20 rounds through before the valve whent kaput.  Moving on, a pair of Gamo Shadows proved inaccurate and downright rudely mannered initially, though they did smooth out nicely to become respectable shooters.  I gave mine away.  My wife still has hers and throughly enjoys it.  Out of the box, however, both were pretty poor shooters.

I jumped on the" M-2004 pistols from Wal-Mart" craze and the first one wouldn't fire.  I went through 5 of them before finding one that works.  This was perhaps the biggest dissappointment -that a company could put out five of something that didn't work for every one of the same something that did.

The lone M-2004 that worked well shot great out of the box and still shoots great with several thousand rounds through it.  It is one of my favorite airguns and is very accurate.

The R-9's, likewise, were accurate out of the box and left nothing to complain about.

Both of the R-1's I've owned have had little problems that needed to be fixed under warranty.

I guess the point is that after over two decades of airgunning, I am more surprised when an airgun actually functions properly out of the box than I am when it doesn't.  I pick the M-2004 as worst because so many of them I bought didn't work.  But the one that does work is something I wouldn't want to part with.

Like I said, it's a tough question to answer..........

Good day;
I have been fooling with gas guns for a couple of years.
I own both the 1077 (bulked) and the CH2000, among others.
Although the results are not in yet (as the research continues), I am working under the strict opinion that you must keep LIQUID CO2 away from any valves.
You do that either through distance or temperature of operation.
To that end, I have bulked my two 1077's, leaving the liquid at least 12 inches from the valve, utilizing a remote setup.
My CH2000 is utilized only under 75F, as the powerlet is so close to the valve.  I have one experience of leaking with it and I attribute that to using it outside in 90F weather.  When I pulled it apart (to install the $8 valve assembly - making it a new gun), the synthetic seal face was fried.
The research continues.
Regards;
Mike

I am sorry to say it was a RWS 48.
Had too much money into it to go on when it failed the second time.
Soured me on moderately expensive air pieces as well as magnums.
I have much more fun (and sustained accuracy) with cheap springers and gas guns.
Only thing I give up is the "long shot".
Regards;
Mike

PS: Regards to Bob.  I'm still out here lurking.

Daisy 1000.   Loud and harsh.
