Talon SS Gets a Double
« on: June 11, 2007, 11:03:06 AM »
I was laying prone in my living room shooting out my back patio door. I was sighting in my scope after a fresh fill of the HPA tank. I had the rifle on the lowest setting and shooting for groups at 26 yards (from patio door to target). Just as I chamber a fresh Predator a small flock of Sparrows lands.

I scan through the scope for the best possible targets then I spot these 2 poor souls.  One was facing direcly away from me and the other right in front if him facing me. I take aim at the head of the bird closest, as I loose the .177 caliber Predator the other sparrow looks up. At that moment, the pellet shatters the skull of the first bird and proceeds to pierce the breast of the other just as it gets ready to fly off. Both dead as door nails in less than a second. I paced the distance to 21 yards.

The Talon SS is QUICKLY becomming my favorite "Go-To Gun"

Well Sam, I was just responding to a post from Dano, who has one on order.. You guys are making me very hungry..:) I would like to ask you one thing. Why did you get the Talon SS instead of the Condor?  Just over a $100.00 difference in the price.. Had my eye on the Talon a year ago and have lately been eye ballin the Condor..:)  Oh! great shot buddy..:)

Nice shooting Sam,  Is you Talon louder than a springer of equal velocity?  I'm always looking for the quietest most efficient rifle I can obtain.

Thanks

Hey, Gene, take a look at Mac1's site for info on the Talon vs. the Condor.  Short version is, you're better off buying a Talon or Talon SS and getting the 24" barrel.  In .22, that will get you around 40 fpe for 30 to 40 shots.  That's what I want to do, an SS in .177 and a 24" barrel in .22 cal.  Add a MicroMeter tank, and I can target shoot forever on one fill, swap tank and barrel, and I can go shoot racoons.  BTW, you should REEEAALLY sell your Sumatra to Dan, he really shouldn't have anything with no wood on it.  Probably not good for him, and if he had your Sumatra, then he'd have to get rid of his TalonSS, which he really didn't need in the first place, but it WAS a really good deal, and he had that AG money in his pocket anyway.  Just looking out for my buds :-)!  Beside, I got first dibs on his SS yesterday, hehe! If he sells it, of course, which he will, of course, 'cause Dan never keeps any of his guns, he just makes them perfect then gets bored and sells them to get something else.   Later.

Dave

Thanks Guys!

Gene: daved said the EXACT reason for a Talon over a Condor. Condor's have problems with their Valve. Not to mention a shot from that the LONG unshrouded barrel sounds like a .22 Magnum going off!

Dave (plateshooter):  Depending on the power level it's pretty quiet. On HPA at the lowest setting shooting at around 550 FPS  the only thing I can hear is the hammer slap. Not much noise at all.  At the HIGHEST setting shooting at close to 975 FPS it sounds like 2 pumps from a stock Benjamin 397.

It's DEFINITLY quieter on HPA than it is on CO2. No matter what setting I have on in CO2, I get a sharp "PAP" about as loud as a REALLY good hand clap. I think this is due to the CO2 still expanding as it exits the barrel & shroud.

I've done a bit of work to my shorud to quiet it down a bit. Still have MORE to do though.

I think the word is starting to get out on the Talons. I glad I already got mine .hehe  Thanks for the influence, had it not been for your posting on the CO2  adaptability of these guns I wouldn't have bought one . They do take a little getting use to , but I think they are just cool to to shoot (pun intended).  I only wished I had gotten another SS in .22 cal instead of the 18" unshrouded Talon.  I like the quiet . kirby

They ARE great guns aren't they???

I love mine. I'm thinking of maaaaaybe selling off a couple of my springers to get another SS and an 18" .22 barrel. Dunno yet though! It's a tough Decision!
I'm a little tired of the hand pump for HPA though. Even though it only takes a couple minutes for a maintenance charge, it still takes ALL of my 225 pounds to push the plunger down once I get close to 3000 PSI.

You gotta get a tank ! I know it seems like it would be a hassle , and that's what I thought until I got one. I bought one used from a scuba shop for $99  with a new visual and 4 years left on the hydro.  . I bought from them so I know they'll refill it. I screw my bottle into the adapter gauge set I got from Pyramyd and ease open the valve till it gets to 2500 psi and close off the valve , then bleed and unscrew the bottle . It cost $7  for a refill but I haven't had to yet. I usually shoot down to 2000psi and on low power I get a lot of shots and it's about 150 fps faster than the !8" barreled talon on CO2 on low power. kirby

Thank you
