AR2078A Questions
« on: June 12, 2007, 01:32:18 AM »
First time posting on the GTA Forum--I have read alot of info on the QB's and am thinking on purchasing an AR2078A.  Anyone have any experience with this rifle and if you can, comment on the plus and minus' of this rifle.  I have ask MikeinIowa several questions.  If you have one and from your experiences what would you do to it and why.

Thanks

Just wanted to say Welcome Aboard Matthew. What ever Mike has said, you could go to the bank with it..:) I personaly do not own that model but I do have a custom 2240 pistol with grips and steel breech and 14 inch barrel and muzzle brake, Custom Moded MA2250B Carbine and a QB79, tuned by CDT. All of them are very accurate and fun to shoot. Your AR2078A is basically a QB78 but a bulk fill and a fancy stock. I am sure it would be a great shooter as well. Archer Airguns sells them in different version values. Only thing with the bulk fill Co2 air guns is that I have found they lock up and need periodic o'ring replacement. Also they are mostly a seasonal air gun.. Any thing below 55 degrees and they loose perfomance.. I owned two of the bulk filled air guns with external tanks and always had problems with leaks and lock up. But that just may have been a fluke but I did sell them shortly after I bought them. I kept my other's and never have had any problems.

Good Luck Matthew and happy shooting..

Thanks for the input.  The AR2078A has the capability to bulk fill but I am going to try it with the CO2 cylinders and then bulk fill with a 9 oz cylinder to see the plus and minuses with both systems to include accuracy, number of shots and velocity.

Does anyone have a favorite pellet design and weight for these rifles.  I'm reading alot about the crosman premiers.

Welcome to the GTA Matt, you will get so much info here you might be overwhelmed hehe. A great bunch of guys to get to know. Also some very talented craftsmen on this forum. I have a QB78D on order from Mike Mellick and I am really looking forward to receiving it and shootin it. As far as pellets go I personally like the CPL's(crosman premier lites) they are very accurate in the guns I have now and I dont realy expect any difference in the QB. About the only thing I see as a drawback with Co2 guns is having to keep them fed....although the gas is relatively cheap it is still one of those things that ya gotta have on hand. I personally like my springers and I keep on hearing that this QB is gonna send me over to the "Dark Side" quicker than a greased banana peel. Honestly the only thing holding me back from a PCP is price hehe but I will eventually have one might even build my own in the future who knows hehe. Another thing I do know about Co2 is the heat range... I work with Co2 at work a lot and basically you have a temp range of about 55 degrees to 95 degrees to where things will work and actually these numbers are the extremes...optimal temp range is actually more like 70-85 degrees. So that being said hehe the gun can be limiting depending on the climate of where ya live.

Ok I shoot....maybe not well but I do shoot hehe, B26-2.177, X3-B3-2 .177, RWS 34 .177, QB78 Deluxe .177, CR 1322 Medalist

Have tried both the .177 and the .22...prefer the .22.
Two  Reasons:
1. The .22 isn't that far behind the .177 in speed but the pellets are nearly twice as heavy.  Not much differnce in trajectory, the .22 is just as accurate, and  the .22 just gets more power.
2. The bolt probe o-ring on the .177 tends to wear faster than the .22's 0-ring.

These rifles do tend to addict you to CO2.  have kept the rifles non-bulked as it suits my shooting style (many short range sessions).  The best local pice for 12gr. cartridges is running $15.43 per 40, which is pretty cheap...still, it does add significantly to the cost of shooting 1000 pellets.

You SHOULD do a bit of smoothing right out of the box.  Internally, the rile's internal edges are a bit sharp and will cut the seals when the gun is dissassembled...so just spend the $, order a seal set, and play on taking it apart, smoothing, replacing the seals, and reassembly.

You will also have to clean the bore; it will be coated with an earwax looking preservative (it's a long boat ride from China) that will have to be cleaned before the rifle can ruely shoot well.

Probably too much attention has been paid to temperature...if it's above 50-60degress and below 95-100, the gun will work fine.  Temperature just doesn't change all that much during most shooting sessions...will notice a differnce in power and scope zero from season to season, but during a given day, it stays pretty stable.

The first few shots from a new co2 charge gnerally shoot a bit off...tehn there is a sweet period of 45-55 rounds....then it falls off  and groups drop lower and lower.  The more accurate the rifle, the eariler you notice the pressure fall-off...and teh faster the rifle shoots, the more gas it will use, and the lower the shot count.

Accuracy has been first rate. Not really up to full match gun standards, but  almost.

Been posted before:

Added to the base gun:
Scope and mount (the scope was $69 and the rings $8 or $12...can spedn less, or a whole lot more...or spend nothing as the apature sight rear it comes with is pretty good))
Adjustable butt ($20 and 90min. fitting)
Stock refinishing( probably $2 of stain and finish, and about 7 hours of work...but there wasn't anything wrong with the stock finish, i just wanted a lighter color)
Stippling the pistol grip ( 4 hours of work, zero cost)
Muzzle atachment (about $.50 of materials and a couple of hours work...proably not somthing you'll need to do)
Dissassembly and smoothing all internal cuts/edges (cost nothing, but took a couple of hours)

Now that one is a .177, and has been tuned slightly to get to 650fps.  That rifle is my "bird gun" and doesn';t need to go any faster to take care of pest birds out to 50yards.

Hi Mathew and welcome to the GTA.
I've seen many QBs (78,79,2078 etc. all basically the same internally) and as another contributor has said its worth stripping it and cleaning up the sharp edges. BOB, aka CDT has a very good article on his site covering the QB family. Or buy one already sorted from Mike Melick if you are in the USA, as others have said, you always get more than you paid for from Mike.

Regarding pellets, we se almost all in .22 here and have not yet seen a .22 qb that will not shoot H&N Field and Target pellets well but they are all different!
