Pest Control question for all
« on: June 18, 2007, 04:08:02 PM »
I was wondering just now, what is the smallest game/vermin everyone has ever taken with their air gun?

Personally, I nailed a mouse 2 summers ago behind the couch with my Sheridan Blue Streak.
I also used to shoot mud dauber wasps at mud holes when I was a kid with my Crosman 766 pump.

Shot a grasshopper off the side of my shop last summer with my old CFX.  As I recall, that was after I got it back from Bob but before I installed the gas ram.  The bug was about 20 yards away, left bug guts on the metal sideing on my shop, but not a mark on the metal.  Never did quite figure that one out.

Hi Troy,

One HOT Sumner afternoon, I was mindin my own business, when a Wood Borer Bee can by me, real close, and got my attention !

Well I was out in the back yard just shootin my Crosman Power Master 760 at targets of opportunity, and this critter went and got my attention. So I watched as he headed to the peek of my house, where he and his brothers and sisters were chewing into the eve of my house, two stories high. Well I thought what the heck, and pumped her up and aimed real carefully, and one of them slowed as it went for the hole it was drillin. I started to gently squeezed the trigger, and to my surprise, down he came. Well I was so happy, that I stood there for about an hour, shootin and a pumpin, but only hit three others. Boy were they lucky !

Oh, and I kilt a shrew, (SHUCHH, not my Wife), that was tryin to bit my shoe, with my foot in it. I got my Crosman 1377 out and pumped her up five or six times, and loaded up a Crosman .177 flat nosed pellet, put on the safety, and put her on my workbench just in case that little critter worked up the nerve to try that again. Well he did, off came the safety, laid the sights on his little head, and squose my trigger, no more hungry shrew chewin on my shoe . :^)

Well....

I know this is gonna sound impossible but I have to chalk it up to luck.

I was shooting at my 30 yard target one day when I fly landed on my target.  I told my daughter about the fly and she said, "Daddy, shoot the fly!"

So I watched it for about 10 seconds through my scope and sure enough he stopped.  I pulled the trigger and saw the fly DROP to the ground.  Curiosity got the better of me and the kid and we went to look for him.

I was stunned to find the fly walking around in the grass in front of the target.  On close inspection I had actually shot off 1 wing!  My daughter told me I was the best shooter ever and I heartily agreed.  I couldn't do that again in a million years I'd bet but it sure was fun.

Only other one worth mentioning was a gopher with my B30 from 37 yards.  I thought that was a tough shot.

Many many many moons ago I can remember being in my room doing homework with the window open (just incase a target walked by). A rather large fly came in the window.
It was flying around the room for a while an finale made the mistake of landing on the cove molding in the corner. I got my crosman 760 and took aim. The good news I got him splat. The bad news I was using BBs and it bounce and hit fancey mirror switch plate and broke it. Wellll....Mom wasn’t happy I didn’t see that crosman for months.

Hey J,

The Carp ender Bees up North are twice as big as yours, I doubt that I could have hit those little ones you have there. Ours are about 3/4 inch across.

I used to line small snails up on a fence when I was a kid. I used my dads Crosman .22 Magnum to pop them suckers. They make a nice BIG splat when hit with a wadcutter!

When I go to the range with my rimfires, I add a dab or 2 of honey or chicken liver to the white parts of the target. It draws horse flies like crazy! I'll get maybe 2 out of 5 with the .22, but 4 out of 5 with the .17 hmr!

Ok recently I shot a pesty Lumber Bee and hit it, cut it in half.
When I reached to pick up the back piece it reflexed and stung me.
I had picked it up between the body and tail (stinger end).
B3 with iron sights, never make that shot again, although I still try.

beat. Smaller pests, and no pellet required. I used to do some shooting down in the Florida Everglades. I have been swarmed not just by flies, but also by mosquitoes. On the worst outings, I'd pop a co2 cart in one of my 2240s and just shoot them off of me. No lead, just gas. But the gas kills the bugs, dead as they'd be if hit by a Mack truck. In fact, I've killed bees, wasps, and flies inside the house using nothing but co2 or air (from a 1322). If you can get the muzzle close, the blast will blow em to pieces. Works well for bugs on on your windows, too. It'd work on the carpenter bees, too, if I could get close enough. They spook me, though.
