Sighted in the .22 CFX :)
« on: June 24, 2007, 08:34:39 AM »
I got up early this morning and got to work on the .22 CFX

Cleaned the barrel squeeky clean, made sure all the stock screws were nice and tight, checked the newly installed scope and mounts, then headed out into my backyard range to put the first pellets through her and do my pellet grouping tests using all the .22 cal pellets on my shelf.

I will do a complete rifle review when I get more time  (I'm at work right now and have to limit my "non official" use of the computer) but suffice it to say I am one happy camper   :)  :)

The rifle shot several pellets  extremely well, giving dime sized groups at 30 yards so I had numerous pellets to choose from as far as picking a pellet to sight in, but the absolute best perfroming pellet out of all em was the Beeman FTS pellets.  After firing my 5 shot grouping test all I saw was what looked like a ragged single hole in the target.  It looked like it could be 2 pellets with almost identical POI but five ??   I wasn't sure if I missed with the other 3 shots or they actually all went in the same place.  I shot 2 more 5 shot groups, each at a different bullseye and quickly found out that the pellets were indeed all going into almost the same hole.  Needless to say I put up a fresh target and sighted the Golden Antler scope in for the FTS pellets.

I didn't do any chrony tests yet but my first day off I plan on doing just that.  From the impact sound generated by the FTS pellets as they struck my plywood target backing it sounded like they were hitting harder than most of the other pellets I tried, but of course I realize that the impact sound can be deceiving so I'll have to see what the chrony shows.

I am really thrilled with this gun.  All of todays shooting was done with the stock GAMO trigger, which I have to say is the best GAMO trigger I've ever gotten - it's really not that bad,,,, but I will of course wind up ordering one of CDT's triggers.

Anyway, have to get back to work,,, my Lieutenant is giving me "they eye".  Will post chrony numbers and such when I do a complete review.  God I love this gun   :)

Glad to hear the FTS's are so good, Jeff, I got a tin for mine but haven't opened it yet.  Decided to run an entire tin of Superdomes through it first, for break-in.  Shot a few Crow Magnums, seems to like them okay, POI about the same as the S'domes, interestingly enough.  Also tried a few Predators, but they're a real PITA to load, I need some kind of pellet seater to get them seated far enough to clear the rotary.  The 'Domes almost "click" into the barrel, very cool.  Best group so far is just under 1/2" at 30 yards, that's still with the stock trigger.  GRT should be here tomorrow.  Then it'll be time to get serious :-)!

I was going to run another chrony test this weekend, but too much going on, I'll wait until I finish off the whole tin of 'Domes.  But I get one heck of a "SMACK!" off the back of my pellet trap, I can feel this thing getting better with every shot.

Here's something to try for those that have rotarys that over rotate.  Mine does, just enough to be irritating.  I was messing around with scopes today, wanted to check the fit of the 44 Mag vs. Nikko.  With the Simmons mounted, I had to reverse the direction of the loading lever.  Guess what?  Over rotation went away!  Decided to leave the Nikko on the CFX, but didn't change the loading lever back :-).  Give it a try, people, it's easier than any other fix I've heard of, and if it doesn't work, oh well, no cost.  Later.

Dave

Hey Dave,

I did shoot superdomes today and they performed fantastic, beautiful tight dime sized group, as did CPHP's, JSB Exact Express, JSB Exact, RWS SHP's, CPL's, and predators.  All of em gave dime sized groups, and this was with the stock trigger, which like I said really isn't half bad on this gun.  The FTS were clearly the best though so I went ahead and sighted in for them.

I also have the over rotation problem.  It over rotates just enough to be a pain in the butt, but after awhile I got the knack of just closing it a smidgen and then no problems.  I did have to use my seating tool a few times,,, very handy to have, but for the most part didn't need it.

I'm really looking forward to running some chrony tests so I'll have some numbers to compare, but with the way the FTS pellets are shooting I'm just gonna stick with them, at least for awhile.

My same Sentiments Jeff. I love my CFX as well. They shoot the most consistent groups out of all my Gamo air rifles out of the box. Let me tell you something.. A good tune and spring guide, and trigger will surely astonish you my friend..:) All these months I have talked off and on about how accurate and solid my CFX synthetic and royals are but you do not know how a tune, lube and trigger makes it a dream to shoot...:) Now you have just got your first taste..:) Carry on my friend and you will really enjoy the CFX as I have..

Hey Bill,

Yup, next outing at the duck farm will be with the .22 CFX.  Gonna try and do it on my first day off which will be thursday.  I'm really looking forward to seeing how she performs on some G-hogs.  I'll make sure to make a post with pics if I score.

Gene,,

I agree, the CFX's are definitely the most consistent of all my GAMO's "out of the box".  The accuracy is simply amazing.  Can't wait for tomorrow morning so I can shoot it some more  :)
