Gamo Nitro 17
« on: July 07, 2007, 03:13:21 AM »
I've been kinda thinking about getting a Nitro 17. I like mid-sized, carbine type guns. They list the Nitro 17 @ 850 fps. with lead pellets, and somewhere in that range is fine for what I want it for.

I have read a few reviews elsewhere, and it reviewed well.

I was wondering if any of our bunch owned one, or had any exprience with it and what your opinion is.

Rich in MI has one, seems to like it. I was thinking of getting a nitro after using the new recon I got. They seem to go together in reviews. But didn't know if it's worth buying over the S1K for about the same price. Only difference being the nitro has a plastic covered barrel and bigger scope. It also costs the same price as more powerful guns from different brands, since I know the published FPS is not what you really achieve, maybe 700 of the claimed 850.

Thanks for the info. The article from the NRA mag. was useful. They got almost 800 fos. with Gamo hunters, which is one of my prefered pellets. I'm not concerned about getting max power for the money. I own several bigger, more powerful guns. 800 fps or so is just what I'm looking for in this gun. I want a shorter, lighter carbine type rifle with a synth. stock. Good truck gun, knock about rifle. Small pest control at ranges of 10-40yds. is all it needs to do, and be a fun plinker.

R7?

Oh you want a synthetic stock.  Huhm, maybe get another Crosman with the skeleton stock?  2250?  I know, lightweight, fun, accurate, plastic "wood"...you need a TalonSS!  Just dial the power way down:)  I hear a rumor that "someone" is making a little real wood for those beasties too, in case you ever wanted to upgrade from the plastic.  Another one, if you can find one, is the RWS M92....mine chronied at 715fps pretty constant, and accurate as heck.  It has wood, but for a $80 or so gun, who cares if it gets a little banged up?  Bedliner it:)  Sold mine a few months back, wish I still had it:(
Cougar ridge still stocks the M93, which is the bigger brother of the 92 for $109.  If it is similar to the 92 but a little faster then it is worth $109 IMHO.

Good luck!

Forgot to mention, lowest price I found was a while back for $120. Now about $131 at http://www.thegunsource.com/store/item.aspx?PID=60138

Same place I ordered my recon from. Took about 5 days to process my order though.
