PBJ - Jackrabbit rule?
« on: July 28, 2007, 06:34:31 AM »
PBJ, are there any rules governing jackrabbits in CA?  I want to know if they can be hunted at night.  I know there are no restrictions on hunting them (no season, no limit), and they hunt coyote and bobcat at night, so I was wondering if jackrabbits could also be hunted at night.  Thanks, David

Note: I just looked up the regulations and jackrabbits are the same as cottontails, 1/2 before sunrise and a 1/2 after sunset I believe.

The new regs say that we cannot hunt after dark and then tell us where we can use lights on furbrearing and non-game hunts. I have yet to get a strait answer other than you need to talk to a game warden in your hunting area and get his name memorized if you shoot at night. Also note that several counties have a "no-projectle" rule which means shotgun only - no airguns at any time. The url you want to read the new regs is: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/07-08-mammal-regs.pdf - if you can figure this our, please email me the answer! All that being said, as I read the regs, you can night shoot jacks in all areas listed as being open to night shooting but not anywhere else. You have to stitch together the regs to get there, but that is what I get out of the three different sections that deal with this matter. By the way, in our part of the high desert, the jacks are not out much late at night as the coyotes are hunting big time. I do see jacks almost every morning early and often at twilight, especially at areas with water and green growth. I have a friend who hunts in the San Bernardino Mountains all year and he has seen and shot on jacks the last three weeks. He tends to use a .22 rimfire as the ranges are long and the jacks really moving but I would rather shoot 2 with an air rifle than a dozen with my Ruger 10-22!!

Bob, thanks for the info.  There is one place I go that the jacks seem to come out at night, so.......lol.  Yeah, I don't get why coyotes and bobcats can be hunted at night, but not jacks.  I will go through the link and see if I can make it say that I can hunt at night for jackrabbits, lol.

"if you can figure this our, please email me the answer!"  LOL, that cracked me up.
