Calm Night
« on: July 28, 2007, 08:52:19 PM »
I took a M8 out for a shoot Sat night to the first spot I was given permission to hunt on with Airguns thats going way back (Good Times) this land has been notorious for breaking a few people and almost killing the land owner twice in one year she's quite rough land all hills and cliffs muddy as hell & to top it of its a beef farm and they dig up the land which makes walking quite difficult most of the time.
The night was very weird not a breath of wind and the moon was almost full and so bright  the Magpies & Peacocks were making a racket now this is normal for the Peacocks but not so much the Magpies thats WEIRD I thought to myself many times through the hunt that night.
Any ways we started out quite eager as we normally do but a little more so for me as it has been about a year since I have visited as I wanted to let it re populate and was also finding it hard to get people to go out there with me & this is one place you don't hunt alone certain falls out there would more than likely kill me.
but all up we had a good safe night and Andy my M8 did quite well I thought no heart attack or anything like that has to be a good sign & I couldnt carry anybody out of there on my back lol.
We got under way as usual Andy couldn't resist making a mess of the first one really typical I should have known better I hate plucking them when they are this messy never mind I thought laughing my but of about it & I can't talk the one with the missing lips and teeth was my fault but the pellet went straight out the back of his neck now that was a cool kill had to put another in his head on the ground as it didn't quite kill him.
Later in the night bout half way I came to my special spot which had two big old Macrocarpa trees on a hillside known for Peacock roosting and sure enough it was full only problem was that it was so light that they could see so we only managed to bag one Peahen & the rest flew the coop if the moon wasn't out we would have taken out more never mind there will be plenty for next time, must take more shooters though.
We only took about 15 by the end of the night but they mostly big ones so I collected nearly a whole kg of fur so thats nearly $90.00 bucks whoohoo.
Andy was feeling a bit shatterd by the time we got back to the car I was tired but more hungry than anything and we had run out of food and the time was like 2am we started at 6pm so thats 8 hours thats a normal hunt for my lots of walking but I like it like that it keeps the body fit and strong.

Excellent hunt there Sean,,, photos are fantastic as well !!  Like Ed I also have a gun set up for night hunting, although I don't go as often as I'd like.  I'm gonna try to get out more after dark.

Really enjoyed your story and pics, keep em coming  :)

Great Hunt Sean,

Your the MAN !!!! You should call this, "The Hunt on Witchey Mountain", with all that SPOOKY stuff going on.

The last time that I got out night hunting, other than in my "OutBack Yard", My friends and I were almost run over by a herd of steers. What a feeling, the ground shaking, and the rumble of hooves, I thought that we had HAD IT !! But it turns out that they are just very curious creatures, and wanted to know who was in there territory. :-)

GREAT HUNT and Photos Sean !!!!!

Can I ask just what you do with the Peacocks ?

Cheers guys.
As for the Peacocks their feathers can be used for flies the trout fishing ones that is the meat on them is no good but the peahens are very nice to eat.
