looking for ideas
« on: August 02, 2007, 10:59:16 PM »
on the best way to drill the front stock screw holes, for a new S1K stock. The easiest thing that I can come up with is to take a 1" dowl rod and secure it in the factory stock, draw a line down each side of the dowl where it meets the stock and drill from the outside in. Then put the dowl in the new stock, line up reference points and drill through the rod into the stock. If it is made long enough to set to the rear of the inleting, then should not even have to measure, it would already be set. So what do you say would this work, or is there a better way?

Mike, if I was going to make allot of these then I would invest the time in making a jig up. That way they all will come out perfect every time.

That was kind of the idea with the dowel. I had an idea for something else, but it didn't seem like it would be as easy to use.

I would make find a piece of stiff and clear piece of plastic that could be formed. Fit solid around your stock using the top of stock as your point of reference. Then punch hole through plastic for the mount holes. Then make up your jig of what ever material you want and use the plastic template to set your holes. Remember that the top of the stock will be your point of refference with the final jig/

That is kind of like the first idea I had, but if the new stock is wider then the holes would be too high.

Mike, sounds like a winner of an idea to me. I'm not familiar with the setup of the SK1, but if it's a bolt/machine screw that goes up vertically through a hole in the front of the forearm into a nut of some kind fixed to the action, then the procedure you've described seems very logical and straightforward.

The only thing that you might consider if you'll be using it a lot is to think about enlarging the hole in the dowel to set in a brass bushing with an ID matching your drill bit that might help to reduce wear on the dowel hole from repeated use.

The 2 front stock screws go up on an angle, so some kind of jig will be needed, unless I were just doing 1. I have a piece of oak dowel rod that will work, but I think I will do your idea with the bushing anyway.  Thanks

Thanks Ed, I've still got along way to go. I've got to open up the end of the forearm alittle, rubs some when cocking. The extra wide finger rest feels real nice. I'm going to add a rosewood cap on the pistol grip. I thought about adding a short peice of rosewood, on each side of the forearm, to have alittle more to hold on too. This piece of mahogany was only 1 5/8" thick, just enough for the inleting. I was very surprised that this stock is as light as it is, feels lighter than the synthetic. I set this 1 to the side until I can decide on a few things, so it's back to work on the B-3 stock, hope to have it finished this weekend. I'll post pics of the B-3 when I'm done, it don't look like a 2x6 anymore, hehe.

John, it's coming along real slow, I was hopeing to have a few more done by now, hehe. Somehow tho my B-3 stock ended up with a grip thats alittle too small for me, didn't you say you had small hands. If the measurements work out I may send you this 1, if you want it.

Simple and extremely functional. And yes, my stock went on the back burner. Too busy at work and way too hot. I've got absolutely no energy left after work and taking care of my boys. What little time I've got is spent getting ready for Field Target matches. Next one is the end of Sept. After that it'll be much cooler, the boys should be settled into a school routine and I can start making sawdust. Maybe by then all you guys will come up with some more new trick I can borrow! Thanks for sharing,
