Hey, Talon guys...
« on: August 05, 2007, 03:08:22 AM »
Does anyone lube their pellets?  My SS with the 24" .22 barrel loves Kodiaks, at 30 yards paint balls aren't much of a challenge.  But I'm using them right out of the tin, no cleaning or lubing.  Opinions?

Also, anyone else filling their guns with nitrogen?  My setup is working out very well, no pumping, and no messing around with dinky scuba tanks :-)!  I really will need to invest in a good regulator one of these days, if only to keep tabs on how much gas I have left.  I like this one: http://www.paintball-discounters.com/get_item_010558_hpa-fill-station.htm , but at $350 it's going to have to wait awhile.

What exactly is your setup? How are you filling it without scuba tanks or pumps? You buy tanks of nitrogen instead?

Never have lubed my pellets, but Mac-1 has a page about it on their website saying it's a good thing for PCP's.....(shrugs) I dunno?!  I bought some RWS Heavies last night at Cabellas.  They are 9.6 grain wadcutters, very uniform looking, clean, etc.... my Talon and my Supersport both like them pretty well, but I have not tried any long distance shooting.  I will try Kodiaks next I suppose, have you tried any .177 Kodiaks in your rig, or are you only a .22 guy?

Nitrogen would work out well I would think, and if your gun catches fire and explodes the Nitrogen will put out the fire.....double bonus points!

Could try looking at military surplus for an old Nitrogen servicing cart regulator, they service aircraft accumulators and tires with Nitrogen.  Dunno if maybe a welding supply house would have something too?  Dive shops might, but would be most expensive I would think.

Today I bedlinered my NEW grip and forend for my talon.  It is now wearing a 18" .177 barrel and frame extender....I figured if I was gonna go 1/2 redneck with this gun, I may as well make it a full redneck bedliner conversion:)   I was planning on doing some chrony strings this afternoon to get my fill/tophat spacing figured out, but Joel came by this afternoon and forgot to bring his chrony......likely story (Joel, if you're reading this Steve shot your chrony, it wasn't me!)...hehe!!!

Rent, actually, but yeah, I'm using an industrial high pressure nitrogen cylinder, 443 cubic feet at 4500 psi.  I figure at least 150 fills, maybe more.  Tank rents for $8.50/mo., nitrogen is $52.  An 80 cf scuba tank would maybe net me 6 fills or so, would cost me $12 to fill, plus the 100 mile round trip to the dive shop.  The only downside to the nitrogen cylinder is lack of portability, but some day I'll get a carbon fiber tank if I need it.  Since I'm getting 60 to 100 shots per fill, and all my shooting so far has been close to home, not an issue.  I modified my scuba tank yoke to work on the cylinder, I replaced the scuba clamp with a nut and nipple to fit the cylinder.  Later.

I have tried .177 Kodiaks, but I don't think I chronied them.  For some reason, I switched to the 12" .22 barrel shortly after I got the gun, then got the 24" .22 barrel and REALLY started having fun :-)!  My brother was here weekend before last, dubbed it "The Bazooka" because of the power and the sound.  Cracks pretty good compared to the SS barrels.

Good idea on the nitrogen reg, maybe the next time I get to Seattle I can try to hit the Boeing Surplus store.  A reg through a welding supply house is over $500, the one in my link is the best price I've found, plus I like that I can adjust the output pressure.

Hadn't considered the fire suppression aspect, I guess the next time we have a grease fire, I'll just shoot it :-)!  On second thought, maybe not.  BTW, what's half red-neck?  Wouldn't that be pink-neck?  Man, that's just wrong!  Later.

Hey, Paul,

The only thing I could find that would handle 4500 psi inlet and 3000 psi outlet was a Harris 8700 single stage.  Like I said, the best price I was quoted was over $500.  The kicker, of course, is the high outlet pressure, most regs top out at under 500 psi.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

Sorry for the noob question but do I need a regulator to fill a talon/condor tank off of a scuba tank or is it just an extra, 'would be nice to have but not necessary' kind of thing? Thanks guys.

I lubed some RWS superdomes  with a little Breakfree and tried them once. I cut a sponge to fit inside a pellet tin and shot a little on the sponge then added the pellets and rolled them around for a couple of turns.  I couldn't  tell any difference  in performance . I've  read some folks lube ; some don't.  kirby

Not for a scuba tank, Ray.  Most are 3000-3300 psi, basically no danger of over filling, although you can wreck valves by filling too fast.  Even with the high pressure carbon fiber tanks, most people don't seem to use regulators, they just do what I do, watch your pressure guage.  I fill slow, and shut the tank off as soon as I hit 3K psi, that actually gives me a 200 bar fill.

Only reason I want a regulator is, I'm a strong believer in the old adage that if it can go wrong, it will.  Or to put it another way, Murphy lives in my back pocket, and she's got a nasty sense of humor ;-)!  I tend to be careful and meticulous in most things I do, but I'm just as prone to the occasional brain fart as the next person, and a moments distraction could leave me with a wrecked tank.  Later.

Thanks, Paul, I like that price much better.  BTW, my nitrogen tank has a CGA 680 outlet, I don't know enough about this stuff to know if it matters.  Later.

Thanks for answering my question daved. You sound just like me, sans the stingy part. So the stingy part of me will have to battle the careful side of me in deciding if I want to spend on a regulator or not.
