Gamo Whisper Re-Visited.... W/Pics
« on: August 07, 2007, 02:37:38 PM »

Ok I had a chance tonight to get the scope on and take a couple pictures. It is exactly the same as Bob and my Gamo Whisper that Gamo was so kind to send Bob. I will be doing the same thing as far as tuning and trigger as on his. As you can see if you compare my new Gamo Whisper with the pictures in my "Accuracy and Handling review" (Scoped) you will see that Bob got the low end scope on his Gamo Whisper where I got a nice BSA AR 9-12X40 AO Mil Dot scope.... hehehe. I have incluced my Gamo S1K .20 so you can see the difference in the stock texture.

Ok, I want one of those scope's with the Whisper under it hehe. Gene and I were chewing the fat about the different scope's, Bob's and his, I'd say so buddy look's like you got a bonus with the gun. On closer inspection of the Whisper, she's got some nice curves and I know that one will be added to my collection. Congrat's again buddy, fine shooter and scope. 8) Ed

If you look real close Ed, you will see there is a difference in the grip area. The S1K has a liter texture where the Whisper has heavier texture for gripping. I would think the Whisper would have the same stock as the Shadow Sport.

She's purdy Gene. Is the forestock longer on the Whisper? I know that you had commented on how light the Whisper is, how does the S1K compare weight wise and in OAL to the Whisper?

I was looking at that too and yes they look the same, but it sure stand's out on the Whisper and I like it. I'm still turning over in my mind what we can do to the end of the barrel hehe. Ed

Yep I gotta get 1 to,hehe. I like the way the grip area has a sharper angle, would appear to have a better feel. Thanks for the side by side pic Gene.

No Stephanie, actually if there is a difference it is not noticeable with guns sitting side by side. The rubber butt plate on the Gamo Whisper is about 1/4" thicker than the S1K. I know the picture looks like the Whisper's fore stock looks longer but not really. And they are exactly the same thickness in the for stock area. The stock of course is for either a south paw or righty.. unlike the S1K.. I guess Gamo's marketing team felt they may be losing some sales so they made the stock ACDC....:) The main reason the Gamo Whisper is lighter is because of the sleeve plastic barrel. There is no real way to measure the thickness of the sleeve but Bob estimates it is around 40 to 50 thousandth thick. But we did notice that the rifling is exceptional. Gene

hello gene iam a new member.   iam stuck between the whisper and the viper rifle.  i will be using it for hunting pests and target shooting in the back yard.   which do you think is quieter and more accurate?  the viper seems to be a couple of pounds heavier, is it a better made gun?   thanks bryan :)

Hi Bryan To be honest with you the Viper Express in my opinion, not a good buy. It is really only good for about 10 to 15 yards if you are trying to kill a varment. Of course I do not own one but for what I use airguns for it would be out of the question for me to puchase one. If you just want to shoot stuff at 10 to 15 yards I guess it is ok. But I prefer an air rifle I can shoot paper with, shoot varments and shoot other stuff for the challenge of being able to hit it at 30 and 40 yards. I own several Gamo air rifles and all of the break barrels are wonderful air rifles including the new Gamo Whisper. I am sure the Gamo Whisper is much quieter at the muzzle when shooting compared to the Viper Express. I guess Bryan it's what you ultimatly want to do with your air gun.. Good Luck Gene

Bryan, The Viper rifle has the same powerplant as the Whisper. The Viper is bascially a Hunter Elite with a synthetic stock. The Whisper and Viper rifle will have pretty much the same power level. The Whisper may indeed be quieter with the moderator that Gamo has built in, and it will definitely be a bit lighter than the Viper. I think accuracy wise, stock for stock, tuned for tuned, it would be a coin toss between the two.

The Viper Express that Gene is referring to is the Air shot gun, rifle combo, and he's right, from what I have seen it hasn't been that successful.

thanks for the reply, iam interested in the viper rifle not the shotgun.   i just assumed the whisper had different internals due to the vipers extra pounds.   i like the looks of the viper and the scope, but i have my own scope to put on.   i quess it comes down to how good the sound damper works on the whisper.   i realy dont know how loud these new spring/air rifles are as i havent used one since i was a boy with my daisy powerline 880 that u had to pump up  :p

There ya go...:) Thats what I get for assuming you meant the shotgun..:) What Stephanie said is exactly correct. Any of the Gamo break barrels with the Shadow powerplant are great air rilfles. I still like the non shrouded steel barrels but times are a changin, and the newer air guns made by Gamo seem to be a bit liter because they are using a rifled sleeved barrel in the shrould now.. The Viperis a good air rifle..:)

Good Luck

in the pics you posted,   is there blue sound dampening material in the new whisper's sound muzzle or is it just hollow in there? :emoticon:

There are what looks like 5 baffles in the sound moderator. Yes they are blue in color and I would think they are made of plastic. The Gamo Whisper does make the report quite low. They say 52% less report noise and that is pretty close as far as I can tell. I have put almost two thousand pellets through two Gamo Whispers so far and the only thing I can hear really is the action and spring.
