Night Light for Scope please advise
« on: August 11, 2007, 12:44:02 AM »
I have a muskrat control issue.  This will almost certainly be an in the water while he is swimming shot.  Seems like the critter makes his move about half hour after dusk so it is getting pretty dark.  Last night I almost had him in my sights but he slipped behind a cedar tree.  Took too long to make a positive ID. He was in the dark shadow from the trees on the west and did not move into the lighter water out of the shadows.  I have a lot of small ducks and nice critters here too.   So the question is will a scope mounted light help.  I tried a Logun Light, a waste of to and from shipping dollars.  I hate to bash a product but not even close to shining a 1 foot beam at 100 yards--20 feet wide at 35 yards.  Never even tried to mount it just returned it. After the fact I saw a couple of reviews which said it was poor.  So anybody have any experience with scope lights or do you think I am wasting time and effort, and I should  Just hope for a clean shot and enough light.  BTW the gun is a Solo with Simmons Pro Air 6x18.  Thanks for your help.

I think that the filter kit for the logun light focuses the beam but I was told it did not. The filter kit was not available at the time. I like your light. Where did you get it??

A while back I bought a laser/light combo from Sportsmansguide.com  and mounted it on one of my springers to make a night hunting setup,,,, works great.  Plenty of light out to 25 - 30 yards for target acquisition and aiming.  Came with the scope mount and took a whole 5 minutes to install.  I did a review of it in the "Review Gate",,, if you do a search you should be able to find it.

I think they sell it for something like $30 bucks.

Target zone is 35 to 50 yards so it needs to be pretty powerful. I did not care for the 6 lb battery on the Logun Light which I would have tolerated if it worked.

You can buy the surefire brand at most shooting suppliers,it`s the same one the cops typically cary on a car stop,it comes in all aluminumn for around $65,or something called nitrolon which is the 1 pictured, kind of a polymer,i have several of each but for the $ diff. I only buy the nitrolon models now.A 6# battery, that sux, almost the weight of the gun!

You can try this website, although apparently he's stopped doing reviews. But it should have some recent ones, including LED flashlights, which I think are better and save on batteries.

I picked up a Ultrafire C2 off eBay after doing a lot of research on candlepowerforums. This is absolutely one of the brightest lights you can buy that will fit in 1" scope rings. You will not believe how bright and how far it goes also. I would consider this thing a weapon by itself, you can easily blind people with it. Very nice all aluminum construction, really a high quality piece.

Oh the best part is it was $28 shipped. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, and I don't back products often.

Did you mount it on a scope or just on open sights?

I mounted it to the scope with some $10 chinese POS (grr).

I wonder if I could of used the flashlight mount from one of my shotguns (made by ATI in the good old USA), it would of been a better alternative and cheaper ($7).

Is this like a set of double scope rings one above the other? Where would one get the mount? Thanks

Yes. Look into the ATI shotgun mount. I like http://www.cheaperthandirt.com and http://www.natchezss.com

They also have several other double ring setups like the one I got.

Any place that sells tactical gear for shotguns or AR 15's should have something that will work for you.
