Lynn,

Welcome to GTA! I just found this place a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying it quite a bit. Everyone here is very freindly and they all have great advice based on a lot of experience. I just got my first GRT-III and I can tell you, you will NOT be disappointed.

From what I can tell with my SK1, you should have no spring issues with the Kodiaks. Fire at will!

Over time it could harm your spring. Since you have already been to Charlie Da Tuna's site, you should go back and read through some of his Air Gun Info stuff and I am sure could find a lot of usefull information there.

I tried looking where I found it there and couldn't but I know that I found it somewhere saying that any pellet over 9.2 or something like that can be harmful to your spring.

Someone pleae correct me if I am wrong.

Hope this helps,

Jesse

If ya think about it,which is easier to push, a volkswagon or a freightliner.............and by the way there are no "dumb" questions, only people to "dumb"to ask.No offense just an observation. But between here and bob`s web site, you can find info. on about anything you want. 8)I`ve usually found the 7.9 crossman domes are about the best in my Gamo`s.Plus if you dont wanna buy in bulk,Walmart sells`em.

lynn,

I also have a model 890 with a CDT trigger on it. It is a great shooting rifle. I would get away from those heavy pellets. Try Crosman
Premier Lights at 7.9 gr. I think you will like them and it will improve your rifles performance. Best of luck...

Welcome Lynn and I second what Barry said.... no such thing as a dumb question around here.
As far as heavy pellets vs. spring "damage" goes, here's my view on the subject.
I shoot what ever pellet my rifles like the most. I figure that over the average life of a spring I'd rather
be shooting as straight as possible as often as possible.
Springs are cheap and easy to replace..... just my 5c worth.
Hey I have a hard enough time shooting straight, I need all the help I can get  :D

All my Gamo's love JSB pellets. Whether its the hollow point or preditor, they are by far the most accurate pellet I have tried to date. Your 890 might like a 10.6 grain pellet just fine, but my 890 might hate em. Thats the world of springer's. Try out the predator's, they are around 8.2 grain and are easy on the Gamo springs. Just remember to sight the scope in for the pellet of choice. 8)

Outstanding question!
« Reply #12 on: August 15, 2007, 03:14:12 PM »
That is an absolutely great question Lynn.  I think some tech advice from Bob would really help here.
First off,  Bob should be able to tell us what spring diameter your 890 has.
Secondly, with that info in mind, you are now able to sort thru all the brands and styles of interest to you.  After we find out the diameter, you can select pellets based first by weight.  You would fare well to stay away from the lightest pellets as well.  They can allow your spring to slam hard upon firing.  Your spring should have at least a little resistance to push against.

If I am incorrect with anything here, someone please speak up.

I would say your Kodiaks are too heavy but won't know for sure until we get that number.
You can find some of this info in the Library, look under the spring section.
Also, I found more info on the Yellow Forum by Russ Best, another known tuner.  A spring diameter of .128 using a pellet of 9.5 gr for any length of time can dramatically reduce spring life.  He also states that this mostly affects .177.

I found this post dated March 27, 2007  Hope this helps.
