Varmint Hunter
« on: August 18, 2007, 06:51:21 PM »
Hi,

My Name is Tim and I'm new to the forum and to airgunning in general.  I recently purchased a Gamo Varmint Hunter after my poorly thought out purchase of a 2250xt. This question is obviously about the VH. I had put roughly 500 shots through the rifle and even shot 2 dimes from  about 40 yards when i noticed that all of a sudden the accuracy diminished severely.  I pulled out the targets and at 30 yards there was no set group. it was like i was shooting around a circle. Has anyone else had this problem? Maybe its trigger pulll but i dont see how i can go from 1/2" groups to no group at all.  I gave it a rest and pulled the gun out today... i was able to put 2 shots in the diameter of a dime in a row and then the rest were horrible... im wondering if its not just me. I ruled out the bad pellets i was pushing through... i had beeman silver ace pellets that i crushed so i picked up some gamo tomahawks... same thing is happening. ( today i was shooting the tomahawks)

Anyways if anyone can make sense of this I would appreciate your input.

Thank you!
Tim

Tim
I have wasted a year of competition (high-power not air) in the past because I thought my skills were poor, when my sights were loose… I have a CFX that really pushed its scope around quite a bit when I first got it. I would encourage you to look at this for an easy fix.

I am no expert on airguns, so I will let others indicate cleaning and possible mechanical difficulties.

Good luck,
Fritz

Hi Tim.......... Welcome to the GTA.. I am sure glad you found us, because we have allot of great members here that can help you with your problem or at least give you some solutions and or fix's that may help out. Fritz has started you off in the right direction. Check your scope and mount for security. Gamo's have a tendency to move scopes and mounts with its recoil. You may want to give us an idea of what mount and scope you are using.. Most of us have been where you are and had the same problem...:) One thing for sure is that if your mount has a stop pin in it, use it....:)

Again welcome aboard..

Welcome aboard, Tim.  My first thought was also scope/sights, don't forget to check stock screws as well.  If all seems snug, I'd look at the breech seal, lots of the Shadow variants can be tough on them.  Have you noticed any difference in the way it feels or sounds when you cock it?  If so, that might indicate a spring problem.  One other possibility, check your muzzle brake.  Another forum member was mentioning a possible clipping problem with one of his guns, and another friend of mine had the brake come completely off his S1K.  Hope this helps, and keep us posted.

Thanks guys,

Ill check my scope mounts. Im still using the stock scope. I took the light and lazer off because they were sliding into the elevation adjustment and it dented the cap. It very well could be the scope. When i get the money for a decent scope and GRTIII trigger I plan on making the upgrades. Thanks much!
