OT dsl router
« on: August 19, 2007, 04:22:16 AM »
I am having another go around with ATT "support" on my DSL. I think I may be having a router problem again. Whose products do you folks use for the router. If this is a router problem which I think it is, then I will not get another one From ATT. I have hardwire connection and wireless. I could not stand talking to the tech guy anymore.

That aint so bad John..:) Switch to Hughes Satalite and get maybe a couple hours a day of maybe if u are lucky as high as a 56 k connection and pay them$79.00 a month for that service..:) I live in the country and that's all they have except dial up and when I had that the phone company would only give me an 2100k connection at best..  The whole thing really tests your patients..:)

Good Luck

I live in the sticks, too, but this is still Microsoft country :-)!  I currently have 3 MB/sec DSL through the phone co, CenturyTel.  My DSL modem is a Netopia, it's a POS but it came with the service.  Actually, it's okay, I just think there are better ones out there.  My router is a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz.  It has 4 Ethernet ports plus wireless, and has worked perfectly from day 1.  I don't use the wireless very much, most of the time it's disabled, so I haven't kept up with the latest.  But I know the new models are even faster.  Linksys is owned by Cisco, I've learned enough about networking to know that if you want it to work, make sure it says Cisco on it.  HTH.

John, I use Linksys at work. For my home unit, I'm using a Belkin. Either brand seems to do pretty well, in my experience. I haven't have any major problems so far with them.

John, before you go and buy a new router, make sure that the router is the problem. There are too many variables that come into play here that may address your problem.

You said you might be having a router problem again. What was the fix the first time you had the problem? A new router, or IP address change of the router or modem, or something else? If you think it is your router, I agree with the gang, Linksys and Belkin are very good routers. BTW, if you think the AT+T tech was hard to understand,....just try to understand the Linksys tech's..heheheee :emoticon:

I'm a computer/network consultant but I like workin on airguns a whole lot more.  The Linksys BEFSR41 is a good router for hardwire and then I use a Linksys WAP54GX access point for wireless so I can isolate the two if need be.  I know what you mean about talking to those "techs", I've gone round in circles for hours with them guys.  Shoot me an email and tell me whats goin on with yer stuff and I'll see if I can help ya...I speaks reel good englisk.

Thanks Do I need a modem on the phone line besides the router. I am Just so ticked off at ATT for poor techs and the ad spamming ATT has instituted on the e mail. I feel that I own my viewing area when I pay for a service. The last problem at the other house took 10 days to resolve and i figure 7 hours on the phone with going over and over the same things. I just could not stand it Sunday when Hector asked "what exactly did you do to reboot the system. I need to know..." Well I am not stupid. There is a reboot on the software and it can be rebooted by uplugging. So after I jumped all over him about all sorts of issues, I tried a direct phone line connection. OK for a few hours and then put the phone filter on to connect the phone. Had one more cannot connect to provider message and rebooted. I would like to have a spare or just change out the router.

John, that depends on what equipment you have(or want). Some of ATT's stuff has a built in modem, a 4 port wired router, and wireless capability all in the same box.  At my house it's seperate, so I need a modem, a wired router, and a wireless access point...3 seperate boxes.

I know it's frustrating, but try to have patience.  It doesn't do any good to get all over the techs, it just takes that much longer to get where you need to be.  If you are not having success with a tech, ask to be transferred to the next level of technical support.  Usually the higher up you go, the smarter they get.  Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time to troubleshoot and get to the right place.
