This is the old style, the new style is still not on the shelves. There are lots of squirrel targets out there but the rat ones are running low on stock or out at most stores. I use home made reducers on my Gamo targets. Either flat washers or foundation washers with a hole drilled in the top that matches a hole I put in the face of the target. I use allen head bolts and lock nuts. The paddle is a lot harder to hit with a 1/2" hole in front than a 1 1/2" kill zone. You can also drill a smaller that .177 hole in the center of target paddle, this gives a better sight picture. I have tried white paint but think that dayglo orange is a better color for the paddle. Thinking of using an old fishing reel to hold the 150' of pull line. Lot's of stretch to the line as it comes, will change out to Kevlar line some day. I dump the split rings and just tie off the line. A swivel in the line will help stop the pull line kinks!

Did it the "right way" first by working from the back....but on my second target, just slapped thw washer on the front and tack-welded it in 4 spots.  Works just as well as the washer on the back, it's just ugly.  Settled on the 20mm washer as a good compromise size (haven't a clue where it came from...found it in a parking lot...seems to have a .80" hole...smaller than 7/8's).

Got tired of shooting the chain off with low shots...line direct also ended to get chewed up from splatter...so added a short length of brass rod...so far, that's worked fine.


For a bit of fun, you can jam an acorn between his paws and his "chin"....kind of a "bonus" target.

Was thinking about drilling the head to a friction fit on a bottle cap...wouldn't be a knock down, and would still fly off on a split, but would be fun.

I tried the washers on the front, made the paddle hard to see. Also was not able to stack washers (my first design). There is an article on the net about cutting off the top of the target face and welding on new faces. Lots of work!! The Rhino targets are nice but they cost over $60!! I would like to see an electric reset with a pushbutton control. Good field target sets do not always have a nice strait lay for the reset line.

I use Steel fishing trace to replace the chain. If you use the nylon coated stuff it doesn't rust. Have not shot one off yet.

Ya, I got the Squirrel Target at MC sports a few days ago, but haven't been able to shoot it yet, due to rain. Once I do, I'll review it.

I was thinking, it wouldn't be to hard to reproduce, as a simple circle target. It would take allot of work to cut a squirrel shape. Whats the difference between the new, and old model?

Only pictures so far of the new model...but it has (1) interchangealbe body outlines or differnt critters and (2) inserts to reduce the hole size.

Can tell you this much from the poor beated to death one pictured...if you can smack the disck with a Daisy 953 at 50yards, it will fall down (that's somthing like 2 foot pounds at best) ...smacking the body with 20foot pounds doesn't make it fall (but will loosen it's footing in the dirt)...and that you can cut a "split" that makes a great big mark on the disk, but so long as it dings the hole in the body first, it won't fall down.

And for fun (which explains some of the beaten up look), let a friend shoot it with a 20ga. at 30yards (put bricks on the sand first).  He though it would HAVE to fall down...but as you might guess, so many of the #6 shot hit the body, it locked up soild and ignored the ones that passed though to hit the disk...fustrated the devil out of him that I could knock it down with a "bb gun", and his 20ga. didn't do jack.
