What type of shooting do you do the most?
« on: July 20, 2006, 09:42:30 PM »
Group:

I thought it might be kind of fun to see where our collective airgun shooting interests are.

Formal Competition?
Informal Target Shooting?
Small Game Hunting?
Pest Control?

While I do more informal target shooting than anything else, my main interest in airgun shooting is small game hunting.

I'd like to get into formal competition again.  I'm thinking about 10 meter pistol, but local matches all seem to conflict with church, so I might pick some other discipline where the matches locally do not conflict.

Anyhow, I'd like to see what kind of shooting you all do the most of, and what type you are most interest in.

I also do alot of informal target shooting and like you I love the small game hunting. Mostly squirrels around here and they pose a challenge when in the trees moving from branch to branch. I can't wait for turkey season to open. :)

And we have alot lakes here so fishing would be nice. I moved from Riverside California a year or so ago. I like the idea that I do not have to go far to do my small game hunting and fishing. There is no traffic... :) and the heat in the summer months is not nearly as bad as So Cal. Also may add that the air here is very clean...

I would like to shoot in some kind of competition while my eyes are still clear...:) I do know that I love air gunning sport and will never give it up..

Hello all...

I mainly do - Informal Target Shooting and Pest Control. I would like to get into some competitive target shooting. I plan on doing some crow hunting this Fall. That should be a real challenge. Best of luck...

I guess I fall into the "Informal Target Shooting" category.  I have about a dozen rifles and 8 pistols.  I just shoot whichever one calls me to shoot it.  I have an indoor 10-yd range with a Herter's 22 bullet trap and a backyard 10-20 yd range with a duct seal pellet trap.  I use Birchwood-Casey stickon bullseyes on 110 lb. card stock for targets.  I shoot everyday whenever I get the urge.  With current highs here in Central Texas around 100F everyday I have been doing most of my shooting indoors.  I may shoot some starlings in the backyard one of these days, but I only shoot toward my own house at the pellet trap right now.  I would need to fix up a starling bait station with a heavy duty backstop before I can go after the starlings.

Following a suggestion of Michigasgun, I recently bought a S&W 4505 6mm airsoft pistol (See pic).  I put a BSA red dot on it, and I have been doing a little fly hunting myself.  It is surprisingly accurate.  I'm doing it for the fun of it while he does it as a public service.  LOL.  He is probably a better shot than me.  I have tried the airsoft 6mm/.12 gm on a tree roach, and while it may not be enough power to do any good, it is a lot of fun.

I too do Informal Target shooting and pest control.

The target shooting ends up being 95% of my shooting and the other 5% is pest control.

I use a bench and shoot at between 30 and 35 yards 90% of the time.

Informal (target) for building up skill. I'm very new to any shooting at all...up to about 150 shots now.

The goal is pest control.

I just took my first shot at a groundhog here and got crazy buck feaver and blew it.

These suckers are so skittish I am shooting off my deck using my BBQ grill as a stand/hide...maybe 35 yards tops.

Suckers made a new tunnel under the backyard concrete shed so they're time is up.

Lots of rabbits and squirrels here too but they don't bother me any so they get to live.

Three home-brew games have kept me happy over the years.

One is to line up fired 12ga. shells on the backstop at 46 yards for unofficail of-fhand competion.. Object is to shoot until you miss...anything over a run of 7is  darned good shooting.

(OK...46yards..use to be 50, but the tree we shoot under grew lop-sided from storm damage, so to stay in the shade, the firing line is now 4 yards closer.)

A basic target is a empty 12g. CO2 cartrtidge hung on a wire (and hung in a kind of box attached to the back stop).  This one started as the permanet "sighter" for the 12ga. game...being more-or-less the same size/shape.  USed it for a sighter for warming up...but once you start your "run" on the 12ga. line, can't take a sighter.

Probably the hardest game is to save spray cans and line them up at 25yards.  Object here is to clip off the little spray valve WITHOUT knocking over the spray can.  Played by alternating shots between shooters...5 points for a valve without knoking over the can, 3 points for a valve with the can falling over, 0 points for everything else. Even with 2 or 3 people saving spray cans, it's hard to get enough of them to play this game more than once a month.

funny, when I was a young teenager I lived in Hemet California, maybe we used to be neighbors?

In Fort Worth Texas now btw, but you probably guessed that by my handle:)

I like to kill plastic army men.  They are evil little things that deserve to be shot.  Sometimes however we like Big Game hunting and we bust out with the plastic rhinos and lions and such.  Have also recently discovered that if you take a paintball, stick a toothpic into it, freeze it, you can then stick them into the ground, or into a nice piece of foam in the yard, they make a nice explosian when shot!  Hard to hit a paintball at say 1o yards with a pistol....or for me it is:)

Hey Dano

Had to laugh about that post. Those evil little army men is a good idea for target practice. I have been using old prescription bottles filled with water. The paint ball things sound great to.

I try to shoot rabbit every day if I can - most often from my dining room porch. I seem to have an endless supply of rabbits and jacks. I have five or six covey of quail and way too may dove. This season, the dove are on the "shoot list" as it is legal in California to hunt upland game birds with air rifles (you need a license and a stamp).

Pick up some fired plastic shotshells..make a nice sound when you "twack" oneand tend to sail a good distance; being tough plastic they tend to kind of self-heal and can take a lot of hits before getting too ragged.

HAve had about as good a run with a 10meter match gun as with a good hi-powered sporter....so long as it's sighted in and you guess the wind right can make some long runs.
