LOL...you know whats scary is that I've seen em do that, lay there for a few minutes, and then they magically are draggin themselves around the next time I look. I've gotten to where I put a followup shot in em just to make sure.I don't want to see any of my quarry/pestssuffer. Just not right and not good karma. It should be quick and humane as possible. They are tough little critters. I had one come at me after I popped him. I couldnt believe it, I was like where's my sidearm? That particular squirrel was so tough he was taking point blank shots to the head with my S1K, and still wouldnt expire...it took like 3 to the head to finish him. I was astounded. Since then, whenever possible, I use .22 pellets, but even then they drag around a little sometimes before I can get a followup in em. Skunks too...who knew? They are tough too. Since I'm dispatching them at night, its pretty tough to place a precise shot in their head. Using a red dot scope and flashlight is the best I can do at about 10~15 yards, which is about 10~15 feet out of their spray range. Using.22 kodiak pellets, I have yet to dispatch one with one shot. They were digging under the fence, coming into my yard, digging around, and spraying my dogs. My dogs killed one and got sprayed in the process. The next one sprayed the dogsbut escaped. My wife and I were smelling skunk every nite for weeks at a time. Sometimes it was so bad we had to keep the windows closed. Finally, I figuredthat this was not natural, so I took matters into my own hands. Armed with a Hammerli Storm .22, I went out for some recon. The skunks were everywhere. Seven have been dispatched within the last year, in a 100 acre area, which is about two city blocks square. This is just urban grassland bordering on residential neighborhoods. It was *unbelieveable*. They were scurrying everywhere. They were running around in peoples front/back yards, with the Burrowing Owls screaming at em the whole time. In fact, the owls seemed to know what I was doing. They would scream, and I would investigate and take out a skunk if it was in anopen grassland area, but I couldnt do anything about the ones in folks yards, until they came out into the grassland. I took 2 out in one night...twice. I had to bury them on the spot to minimizethe skunk smell. Apparently I didn't bury them deep enough, because I saw vultures picking at their remains. There's still a couple left, which I feel is pretty natural, and as long as they stay away, then they are safe.
