First Impressions; Umarex CX4 Storm
« on: September 26, 2007, 02:18:58 PM »
Opened the box, and was pleasantly surprised to find a foam-filled plastic case, which housed the rifle.  There are cutouts for clearance for a tall red-dot scope, or other sighting appendages.  My Walther PS-22 Red Dot Electronic sight didn't arrive, so can't review that.

One word of caution, right out of the box.  The recoil pad removes to gain clearance to the Airsoft 88G CO2 receptacle.  I installed the recoil pad, and promptly tried to hand the rifle to my wife for inspection, when the recoil pad slipped out of its snaps, causing me to lose grip on the rifle and hit her shin with the picatinny rail mount, which left nasty abrasions and cuts.  We were both sitting side-by-side.  As shipped, the recoil pad does not not lock solidly to the butt.  I'm going to have to stress the recoil pad snap locks outward, so it locks.  An unfortunate preventable incident, that I won't repeat.  I normally hand any rifle to someone after checking empty, and safety on, by holding the rifle by its handgrip and forearm, and holding it straight out at a 45 degree angle.  I held the recoil pad this time, unfortunately.

I have been forgiven, for now...

...on to the impressions.  The fit and finish of this rifle are first-class.  It looks, and feels like a quality piece.  The weight also gives it that well-machined feel.  At no time, did I think the CX4 looked, or felt "cheap", until I removed the closed-loop conveyor (clip) for the pellets.  While it does use cheap, flexible plastic for the conveyor belt and pellet cylinders (30 pellet clip), it does a remarkable job of feeding the CX as fast as you may pull the trigger.  The most unique feed mechanism I've seen, and it works flawlessly, but (and it is a big but) replacements are 25 bucks a pop, and you will need at least two, as this thing goes through pellets and CO2 faster than anything I've had the joy to shoot.  I personally feel that the 25 buck tag on extra clips is steep, but nobody asked my opinion on that yet.

It was dark when I finally got a chance to shoot the beast, and it shoots as butter smooth as it looks.  Recoil is non-existent, and the blowback action is buttery, as well.  There have been reviews from owners that stated that it loses lots of air around the handgrip, implying that it "leaks", but this is blowback exhaust, which is completely normal.  Some have complained about heavy trigger action, but it is not bothersome, to me at all.

The rifle is much better made than the NightStalker, and for the difference in price, it better be.  No time to chrony or give other technical opinions, and will probably wait until the scope arrives, and several hundred pellets flung for a detailed report.

Oh! Almost forgot! The rifle may be "uncocked", a desirable safety feature.

You may consider this rifle as a long barreled pistol, with stock permanently attached.  It's short, mean looking, and quality-built.

Thanks! I kept getting bumped, so my other piccies didn't make it on the first post...here they are, I hope!

Best of all, UMAREX USA is in Ft. Smith, AR, just a stone's throw (pellet's path?) from here!

Technically, the bolt is a cocking lever, but the rifle is truly semi-auto, after the initial bolt cock.

Thanks, old! Nice review.  BB's right, this gun BEGS to be rapid fired.  I haven't adjusted  the  peep/post, and did feel they looked a bit wonky, and basically blew-them-off as the red-dot should be here tomorrow.

I don't expect match pistol accuracy out of this thing, and envision a "course" setup with shatter blast or clear hit targets, at close range.  Maybe running (OK...at my age, walking) from target to target.

Great review Charles. I have been gazing at that gun for a while and your review makes me want to push the order button yet again. Trouble is that there are so many pending order buttons on my list I just don't know which one to push next.. hehe. Very good review. Keep us posted.

Walther PS22 Mounted...
« Reply #7 on: September 27, 2007, 01:59:10 PM »
Just got the Walther PS22 on the CX4 tonight, and it's kind of freaky, keeping both eyes open and being able to sight! Don't have the time to sight-it-in, and won't 'til the weekend...work calls.

I don't like the rear peep-sight walls, which will not allow me to mount the PS22 as far back as I'd like.  Will know more when I have more time to peer through the scope during daylight hours.  I'm not too keen about maybe having to buzz-off the top of the side walls, to allow clearance.  One should not have to do this.

It is a very sturdy scope, much sturdier than it looks in the pictures.  The scope mount is very wide between it and the picatinny rail.  It only has the illusion of being wimpy when viewed from the side.

EDIT: I sighted the scope under bright light, and found there is no cause for concern, wanting to mount the scope further back.  Since it is a 1X scope, the eye-to-lens  distance is not that critical, only changing the apparent size of the aperture, slightly.  The recommended minimum eye-to-scope distance is 3 inches.

This is good, as mounting the scope further to the rear, would have fouled the positioning web in the included gun case, making surgery on the case inevitable...life is good!

One nice little detail is the dual lanyard holding the elev./wind. caps in check, when removed.  There is a screw on the scope, between the adjustments, that needs removed and the loop fastened.

I trust that the PS22 is a red dot sight, correct?
If it is, then eye relief is not really a concern.
You should be able to position that sight wherever best suits you, fore and aft.

Speaking of the Gun Case...
« Reply #10 on: September 27, 2007, 03:17:09 PM »
...here is a piccie of it, with rifle/scope, a near perfect fit.  There is room for an 88G CO2 bottle, directly above the stock, as well.  The case closes with 4 slide latches.  The 88G CO2 bottle plastic cap fits nicely over the muzzle of the barrel, keeping out spiders and other miscreants.

The webbing around the gun gives you 4 compartments to store "stuff" in, but I like to carry pellets/wrenches/goodies in a separate small tackle box.

Chrony Results

10 shots, CPHPs:

Low: 578 fps
High: 625.4 fps
Average: 600 fps

EXACTLY what it is advertised.  Refreshing.

May have to load a few PBA Raptors, just to see what is achieved, for no other reason but curiosity.

Have noticed that the pellets like to be staged deep in the magazine cylinders, for max accuracy and velocity.

I REALLY love this gun now, with the Walther PS22.  Trigger is heavier than most, but doesn't bother me much.  It breaks nicely.

It is medium loud, with a high-pitched report, that really pierces.  My Gamo rifles are whisperers, compared to the CX4.

No covert neighborhood plinking with this one!  8)

Hey Charles, I've been looking at the Storm for a while now but the one question I can't seem to find an answer to is if the mag will accommodate the Hyper-Velocity Lead Free pellets: (http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/pellet.pl?pellet_id=243). Could you do me a favor and measure the depth of the magazine cylinder?

I like the Raptors except for the cost. If the cheaper lead free pellets work I would buy this gun in an instant  :)
