Pigeon Safari
« on: October 01, 2007, 10:38:14 AM »
This hunt was conducted on 21 September, 2007 with my wife’s new Weihrauch HW-30. This rifle is our first higher quality adult air rifle and I‘m glad we spend the dollars for it.  It has a BSA (Older) 4X32 AO scope mounted on a BKL 4” unitized cantilever. At the time of the hunt the rifle only had 40 pellets through it and was only three days old.  The wife shot  4 of the pigeon , all with head shots. I shot the other two, also with head shots. One of the lessons we learned was about the position of the pigeon and where it would fall after the shot. We were shooting them under a Interstate bridge and three of them fall on the concrete super structures and were unrecoverable. After a couple of these we figured out how to harvest them. It was not to difficult to get into range because I think this was the first time they had been hunted. I cleaned them , by first dipping them in hot water and then plucking them like my grandmother did her chickens. It take about 30 minutes to do all of them. The wife baked them on Sunday for dinner and they were very yummy. The next time we have them we are going to cook them in the crock pot on slow heat. They were a little tuff baked, but good favor. The pellets we use for our pigeon safari are the CP Lites and they did what we ask on them. Will we go on another pigeon safari? I think so, but it will have to wait until I get my HW-50S which I ordered from Pyramid Air these morning. I had to order the model with the diopter rear sight because they were out of stock on the regular rear sight model. I also ordered a chrony so we can monitor the health of our new air rifles. I want to thank PeakChick for the tip for the 10% discount too, Thanks!

Great account of your pigeon hunt William. I know I am very fond of my HW30 for ridding my yard of pest birds. It's nice to see another female airgunner, your wife is quite the crack shot with her HW!

Excellent shooting, great pic to.  Also glad to hear you and the Mrs. enjoy eating the pigeons,,,, I thought I was the only one who ate them   :)

One of my favorite ways to prepare them is to pluck them, split them in 1/2, season them a bit and then fry them in some melted herb butter until the skin attains a light golden brown color.  Nothin better.

Anyway, great post and pic.  You and the wife keep up the good shooting and keep posting the hunt details.

you should reach out and open a wild game eatery. You being our wild game chef that you are, and the wild game fixin's you come up with sure sound good. Might even be able to get Sean to send up a few of his bushytail possums...lol... Let us know when you open. Me and a lot of the others here will be beating down you doors. Give you something to do when you ain't hunting.

Hey Bob,

I would enjoy that,,, but it wouldn't leave me enough time to go huntin  :)

I do actually whip up quite a bit of wild game for the guys at work,,,, venison chili, steaks, ducks and geese, and of course one of their favorites...... venison and goose jerky.  Only problem is I spend hours makin the stuff and when I bring it in all the guys come in off the road to chow down and it winds up disappearing in about 10 minutes.  I don't mind though as they really enjoy it and they work hard and do a good job so it's nice to be able to provide them once in a while with a  treat that they enjoy.......  Matter of fact will be bringing in a bunch of venison chili for them next week.    :)

Nice line up Froghunter.  Looks like you got competition already!
Try shooting some Predator Poly tips in that HW30.
