breech seal
« on: July 27, 2006, 02:47:09 AM »

what is the correct procedure to change the breech seal on my S1k?

I have spares, and the one I have in the gun is getting a bit ratty.

What should you look for to know when to change it?

?????????

It had about 1000 rounds before going to CtT for a turbotune, and now has about 1000 more.

It isn't looking "sharp" anymore, there are little strings of rubber around the outside edges, andsmall nicks on the inside edges.

It looks like it may need to be changed, but maybe they can wear a lot more before becoming a problem, I'm just not sure. The pressure can get up there, so maybe it needs to be changed sooner than later.

I wish I could tell you how to remove it - but I've not done a Gamo breach seal. I'd suspect that you should be able to leverage it out (carefully) with a couple of small screwdrivers.

However, the breach seal should not be wearing out nearly that quick. You might want to try to debur the opening for the transfer port, where it mates with the breach. A sharp edge here might tend to damage the seal.

Even if there are little strings and such hanging off the seal - that shouldn't really be cause for any concern. The Gamo seals are pretty soft - that'll make up for a lot of small imperfections. From your description, it sounds like you might not really have a problem.

a little effort. I use a pointed object to get it started out and then just pull it out. It is a little different that just an o-ring breech seal as you will see. After it is out, be sure to clean out the seat area real well and that there is no residue left behind.

Installing the new one can sometimes be just a bit difficult getting seated all the way in as it is soft and doesn't want to slide down into the seat very easily. Lube it with some silicone and try to install it and be sure it is seated all the way to the bottom. I sometimes stick it into the freezer for a few minutes to harden it some and not be so flexible. Then with a slight film of silicone over the surfaces, it will go in and seat easier. Press it in with you fingers as far as it will go, then, using a piece of wax paper over the breech, carefully open and close the breech a couple of times. That should seat it pretty well.

The Gamo breech seal seldom goes bad even though it may look rough. The way to check it to see if it is leaking is cock the gun, insert a pellet and put  a small piece of wax paper between the breech and the port and carefully close the breech. Fire the gun. Carefully open the breech again and see if the pressure has blown a hole out the side of the wax paper past the edge of the seal. If not, it's not leaking. There will of course be a hole  in the center.
