B-3 Bags a Pigeon
« on: October 03, 2007, 12:54:47 PM »
Late this afternoon I was sitting outside with my camo stock B-3 doing some plinking and suddenly heard the flutter of wings.  I looked up and was astonished to see 2 pigeons landing in the maple tree 20 yards away.  They must've been coming in for an afternoon snack at the bird feeders before heading off to the highway bridge a couple of miles away for their nightly roost.  There's a huge number of pigeons that live under that bridge and most of the pigeons I see in the area live there.

Anyway,,,, there they were,,, the two of em just sitting there on a branch looking down at me.  I already had a GAMO master point pellet loaded so I picked out the bigger of the two birds, put the crosshairs on the breast and squeezed the trigger.  The B-3 made a thunk which was immediately followed by the audible "POP" as the pellet slammed home in the birds breast.  The pigeon fell straight down and never even twitched.  The second pigeon took off and landed in another one of my trees and I almost got a shot at him, but as I was maneuvering for  a clear shot he got to nervous and took off and flew in the direction of the highway bridge.

The wife had gotten home from work just a little while earlier so I didn't get to take any pics, she has a thing about me hunting in the yard, but that bird was nice and plump.  It's resting comfortably in the freezer.  The camo B-3 came through again,,, she's a great back yard hunter,,, nice and quiet but deadly accurate....

Jeff,

Way to go! The wife and I are planning another Pigeon Safari for next Monday. I will have that day off and the kids will be in school (The State is counting it as a snow day) Me and mom-mom are planning to hunt the squirrels alittle that day too. Hopefully the HW-50S will arrive tomorrow and I'll gett'er sighted in and harvest something for the freezer. From your post you may want to do a visit to the roosting site and harvest some too.

Good one there.
FWIW, pigeons are disease carriers, aside from being an introduced pest species that displaces songbirds.
Growing up, we had to put down a wonderful English Setter dog infected with a disease carried in mold spores in pigeon manure called Blasto Micosis.
I despise pigeons ever since, but they are too wary to allow a shot.

Hey William,

Unfortunately there's no way to legally shoot near or under that bridge,,, I wish there was !!!  There must be 150 pigeons under that bridge, actually 2 bridges fairly close together.  The only way to shoot there without attracting attention would be at night, but like I said it would be illegal so I'll just have to keep dreaming about being under there with an air rifle  :(

So for now I'm happy just popping  a stray pigeon here and there when they swoop into my yard to dine  :)

I like to bring in sky rats with food for a day or so and then play SWAT Sniper, hehe.

Just curious, USNCop, as a part of my guessing the origin of your chosen nickname.
Were you either a Navy Master at Arms or NIS (now called NCIS)?

I was actually neither.  Sounds like you were a Squid at one time?
I was deployed to Asia after 9/11 and trained for Law Enforcement with an emphasis on Anti-Terrorism.

I have since returned to the working class and airgunning!
How about yourself?

Yep, definitely an ex squid, served 1987-1991.
Gunner's Mate, hah!
I was responsible for everything from our 1911A1s up to and including the M2-HB (.50 BMG).
Shot THOUSANDS of rounds out of those over the years.
Oh, there was another gun that was my real baby, the one I went to all that extra training for to get NEC 0876:  MK42 5" Naval Gun System.
A bit of a step up from .177, don'cha think?
I'm glad to hear that you contributed in your own small way to crushing these terrorist b%*tards.
We all do our own part as a team, and it is quite satisfying to know that even someone like me can say he was a part of the team that helped end the Soviet (Evil Empire) Union.
Here's to hoping that you will get the same feeling when these terrorists are smashed like a fly taking a hit from a JSB Predator.

My first tour was '88-'92.  I was on the USS Cushing DD-985 (now de-commed).
Yeah, a small part was right, just wasn't enough.  I've gotta carry that the rest of my life.
I should be over the pond "gettin' some" with the rest of my fellow servicemen/women.

But I'm stuck Stateside by circumstances beyond my control.  So I continue serving by working for the Dept. of the Army as a Firefighter.
I keep my weapon skills up by airgunning and pretending the local vermin are "insurgents."  Haha!  They get wacked continuously!

Good to hear from one of my own, and a tin can squid at that.
;-)
I was on two ships, the U.S.S. Richard E. Byrd (DDG-23), and Adams class, from 88-90, and decommissioned that, then was on the U.S.S. Moinester (FF-1097) from 90-91.
It just blows me away to see that they decommed all the Spruance destroyers, including the Cushing.
Sakes, they are even about to roll out the first successor for the Arleigh Burke destroyers.
Yeah, sometimes, I really do wish I had stayed in, but, as with you,  I had my reasons for letting my enlistment expire.

Thanks Jason.  You're better off staying at home, trust me on this one.
Ya know, this airgun thing is spreading to .22's now.  Where am I supposed to put all these toys!?
