Question about laser sight mounting on CFX
« on: October 03, 2007, 02:37:22 PM »

On my CFX .22 I have mounted a BSA Laser sight. I have mounted it on the rail beneath the muzzlebrake. Would it be better to mount it on the scope rail instead?

I ask because I notice that when firing, the laser makes a little squiggle on the target, which seems to me that this might be the recoil vibrations doing this. And then I thought how much can these little sights take? Would the sight be subject to less vibration if it was mounted on the scope rail?

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience withmounting laser deviceson a CFX orairguns in general? Any failures with the BSA laser sight? Sure is an awesome little puppy...puts that pellet right where I need it, but of course that changes with distance. But for sighting up on a given distance...this baby is really accurate. Plan to shoot rats with it, as they show up in the same places and I'm in the same sniper position. I'm talkin 25 yards max.

The laser sight is this one:

Here are my thoughts on that..:) When you add any weight to the barrel of a springer, I have noticed a POA shift. You can compinsate for it but remember you are throwing off your CG or balance point. I have tried it on my CFX and found the same problem you have. So I mounted it on my scope when I use it. Or if you do not use a scope then use the rails. Worked great for me..:)

I haven't mounted a laser sight on my CFX just yet, but thanks for helping answering my own question before I even asked about which laser fits the rail below the muzzle on it.
As for vibration, I suspect that you might get somewhat less vibration on the scope rail, but who wants to sacrifice using the scope for a laser instead?
I suppose you could remove the scope and use the laser instead if you really want to, but I think (haven't done it yet, sorry) that having the scope as a way to analyze where your laser is illuminating would be quite useful for placing your shots.
As for durability, I seriously doubt that your BSA laser will fall apart, just as long as you keep it securely mounted and don't allow the battery door and other possible areas that could come loose snug.
After all, it WAS designed for airguns, so I don't think it will just fall apart.

I have two Airgun's with the laser mounted on the scope itself and I have found it to be a good location. When I mount the bracket for the laser I use the thin black craft store foam. It act's as a vibration reducer and protect's the scope. Pic of my ShadowSport with a laserlight combo on the scope.Ed

I bought the BSA combo laser/flashlight.  Mounted it on the scope.  The flashlight came with a defective switch, had to use the pressure switch.  The flashlight wouldn't illuminate much further than the end of the barrel (OK, not quite that bad).  The laser kept losing its sight-in, after repeated adjustments and locking it.  Sent it back for refund, and am now looking for a reasonably priced IR day/night vision scope.  No such thing as a reasonably priced IR scope.

I have a laser mounted on the bottom of the barrel on my Whisper  :emoticon:

Works fine and holds zero, but I mainly use it for close range (15+ yards) and for illuminating long distance targets through the scope...

You can get the pressure switch separately for a few bucks if you want....

Thanks, yep I saw those...and I figured I could get some later if needed. In addition to the one like yours, I bought a lot of 4 laser sights for 30 bucks but they are not ncstar, and no barrel mount, just rail mount hardware, and they come with the remote switches. Lasers are adjustable via windage and elevation screws, and mounts/lasers are made of metal. Had to get verification on that from the seller...he assures me that they are adjustable.

Looks like no more lots of 4, but lots of 2 are there

I have a CFX .177 which I also use to snipe rats. I found that if my laser was on top of the scope or under the muzzle it could only be sighted in at one range which I found annoying. Since I have a scope, I removed my front sight and mounted the BSA laser on top of the muzzle with some zip ties.

I found that it was the perfect place. The laser was directly inline with the barrel, it didn't interfere with the scope and it stays inline with the round at multiple ranges. It worked so well that I was surprised to find that no one makes them.

The problem though, I had to constantly zero it because it wasn't a good solid mount and it just plain looked ugly. I have been looking all over the net for a LOW PROFILE laser with a 3/8 dovetail mount with no luck. If/when I find one at a reasonable price I am going to see if Gene can make me a brake with dovetail grooves on top.

I am also exploring the possibility of mounting it where the rear open sight was.
