Long Haul
« on: October 20, 2007, 06:47:56 PM »
The weather turned crap yesterday arvo but I was still watching the sky lucky I only had two gins cause it only rained for a couple hours then the sun came out again thank god cause it felt like months since I had been out for a hunt.
Seven pm arrived and it was time to load up the cars Andy and Chris turned up a little early as usual which is good I'm usually the one that farts around triple checking that I have everything we need but all packed and we were gone.
We arrived about seven thirty geared up and started our walk checked the first spot and nothing which I was sorta expecting as I knew all the Possums would have moved on to the poplars for the new growth but as we headed of to check those spots I noticed a magpie so I couldn't let it get away with being spotted like that and took aim ant stopped it from breathing.
Almost to the poplars up on the top flats I spotted a hare about thirty meters of took aim and ended up shooting it right in the butt boy did the sob jump clear out of my scope view and then was gone arrrrrrr bloody wind she was blowing force gale winds last night, Any how we carried on and round into the next paddock this time the wind was behind me which was a very good thing for me but not for the next hare that I spotted and this one was about fifty meters out way to far for my liking so I kept the spot on it and very slowly crept toward it got within about thirty meters and got down onto one knee ready to take the shot and the bugger wouldn't stop moving and kept coming towards me it stopped about fifteen meters out just long enough for me to put one through it's chest and it was over huh any closer and I could have just wacked it over the head.
We ended up getting to the poplars well only one area of the poplars we didn't even cover half of the farm the shooting was to good in the little section of poplars we covered we shot 41 possums wow that was fairly good if we had covered the rest of the farm I think we could have taken an easy hundred.
As buggered as we were we decided to head out as the sun would be almost up by the time we got back to the cars got half way when I spotted two turkey one sitting on an old tree stump and a bloody big male sitting on the fence, now I knew we could semi trap these birds so I sent Andy and Chris up and around the little hill to cut them of as I slowly crept along the fence line slowly moving them to the shed where they would be cornered when we got them there I knelt took a good aim and shot the big male right in the brain box now as he fell the female had just moved round a clump of earth out of my sight which is why I didn't move as Andy and Chris were waiting for it just at the top and as it came running back cause it saw them both then it saw me and stopped giving them both the opportunity to shoot and they did two shots in the head and it was a cool and totally safe angle for me to watch it they blew it clean of it feet there you have it a really good shoot eleven hours in total but really good I got to bed at six am and didn't go to sleep till seven got up at lunch time to prep my kills for the ice box not sure what time Andy got to work on his bird but I'm sure he has by now.

At the rate you and your friends are shooting things there should not be much left on that little island of yours to fill the freezer.

Do you have hunting seasons for the possums and turkeys, or can you go and hunt whenever you want?

Here in the states, at least in Wisconsin, you can only hunt turkeys in the spring and fall.  Even then you are only aloud one bird per season.

And as for the rabbit, I think someone has been feeding it steriods.  That size of a rabbit is just not natural.

Thanks for the story and the great photos.

No seasons here we hunt all year round and take what ever we want, The only season animals are ducks and quails stuff that the duck shooters are after.

And it's a Hare in the picture guys I wish it was a rabbit but nope it's a hare this is average size for a hare in nz

heh
It was a joke taken from the movie "The Silence of the Lambs."
It's from the scene at the end of the first meeting between Anthony Hopkins' character Hannibal Lecter and Jodie Foster's character Clarice Starling.
It's one of the most memorable quotes in relatively recent movie history.
