Gotta get a good laser....
« on: October 21, 2007, 02:45:15 AM »
Was FINALLY cleaning out my shop the other day.  For reasons best not gone into here and now, it's basically been open since last April.  I'd been seeing signs of small rodents, but wasn't worried, there just isn't anything in there to keep them there.  But lately, when I've been out there, I've sometimes had the feeling that I wasn't alone.  Turns out I was right.  Friday, out of the corner of my eye, I caught movement.  When I looked up, there was a big fat pack rat on one of the roof trusses, heading for my storage loft.  It's a mess up there, barely room to move, poor light, and lots of boxes of who knows what.  The longest line of sight is the edge, and thats only 20 feet.

Anyway, got my Talon from the house and headed back out to the shop.  Of course, I've got the 24" .22 barrel in it, and a 6.5-20x scope on it, and I've never shot it at less than 30 yards.  Not exactly the right rig for hunting in a box forest :-)!  I usually shoot Kodiaks, but I made one good decision.  I had some of those cheap Crosman wadcutters on hand, that's what I loaded up.  Sure enough, even with the scope turned down all the way, I couldn't see the little bugger through the scope!  Fortunately, I've got a fairly decent light on my gun, and when I'd hit it with the light, it would freeze for a few seconds.  It finally held still a little too long, I was able to practically touch it with the rifle barrel and pull the trigger.  One dead pack rat.  And even with the extremely close range, the wadcutter didn't penetrate, which is what I was hoping for.

But all of this pointed out the fact that I NEED a laser for short range stuff.  I had at least 3 or 4 shots at less than 10 feet that I could have taken if I hadn't been trying to figure out how to SEE the damn thing!  So I'm looking for suggestions from those of you that have actually used the various lasers.  I'm looking seriously at the Beamshot 1001 U/B.  It's about $120, plus $12 for a mount and another $12 for a switch (I don't like pressure pad switches).  I know the regular 1000 series laser are cheaper, but this one has a better lens system so you get a tighter beam.  The green lasers are out of my price range.

So how 'bout it, people?  Anyone familiar with these?  Something you like better?  Thanks in advance.

Dave

Hi Dave

I have a ( I think) FML or some such name that I acquired locally for around 55 dollars. I like this one because it uses a Cr 123 battery, and it has plenty of power. So far I have been pleased with it and it holds the zero well. It came with two mounts for a weaver and a dovetail and a pressure switch. I have it on the front accessory rail on my SS. I was working on zeroing a scope and it is nice to point and shoot. In my limited experience I like to get some things locally. I had to return one because it did not work. I just hate shipping and handling. It is at the other house so if you are interested let me know and I will check the name out etc.

I got a pair of these for about $90.00 each.

They're really visible in daylight, unlike almost all of the red lasers I've tried.

Like 'em so much I've a pair of FM 2-6 X28s to mount 'em on centerfires.

They WILL heat up, and will eat your batteries if you leave 'em on very long at at time.

Have both pressure switches and endcap on/off switch.
