Looks like I've run into a problem with my Whisper
« on: October 21, 2007, 04:41:01 AM »
Last night I installed a GRT-III and everything went pretty smooth....

Took me about 30 minutes to install with 20 of them spent combing the floor with a magnet cause the damn E-clip shot across the room  when I tried to remove it  :o

Anyhoo, today I hit the range and was getting some VERY tight groups  :)

After about 50 rounds, I tried to cock it and the barrel felt a bit looser than normal as if it were too easy to break down from the straight position....

It got tighter about half way down, but seemed to lock ok...

Took a shot and barely had any power  :o

Felt like an old Crosman pneumatic with one or two pumps  :0

Tried it again and got the same thing...

Figured I probably goofed sumthin up during the install, so I took her apart again and checked all the parts fudged with, but everything seems intact...

Put the stock back on, but now she won't cock at all  :0

I can break the barrel down, but it only goes about half way and tightens up without catching...

Any ideas what this might be?

Probably lost the cocking linkage roller(s) when you pulled the action out. They slide in inlets in the stock to push the piston back. If they're gon, you get a binding situation. Round, black, about 5/16" dia, 3/8"long with about a 1/8" center hole. HTH.

The two little plastic rollers (one thin, one thick) is in place and working...

I just took her apart again, removed the GRT-III, reinstalled it and she's cocking again, but still with very low power  :0

Tried putting a pellet in and it didn't even move (just sounded like a little puff of air)

It feels as though the spring is kaput, but I have no idea how to go about checking it...

With the stock removed, I can slide the spring back and forth in the chamber with a small screwdriver...

Is this normal?

I think Ric is right with your 2nd problem. The first sounds like the spring broke :0 , take the stock back off and you will probably see it.

Just took her apart again and spund the spring with a knife and this is what I saw:

So what options do I have now?

Is there another heavy duty spring available or should I just replace the stock trigger and have Gamo warranty it? (which they'll prolly void since I turned a few screws)

Crosman spring will work, or if you want to upgrade you can go with Jim Maccari's spring, but it may require guide fabrication.

Well, according to Gamo's site, turnaround time is about a month  :0

I don't think I can do without her for that long, so I think I'm gunna send her out to CDT for a supertune  :emoticon:

Wow, Rick, that spring broke early in it's lifetime. One in my S1K lasted 2500 rounds. Got a Maccari spring in it now and it's lasted 3000 shots. Bob( CDT) is definitely the MAN if you want to send it out. Good Luck.( When I put my GRT-lll in, I lost the roller and it wouldn't cock either, but I had only shot it about 300)

What's the average lifespan of a spring?

I've shot about 5000 mixed pellets since I've had her :o

Was it the smaller or the larger spring that was broken?

I had a broken spring in my Shadow, it was the smaller spring. I had no pellet movement with only one spring, but with the bigger half of the busted one in and some oil it shot okay. I had a few other broken parts and replaced them, check all around to make sure everything else is intact. Now it won't cock, but I'm pretty sure its just oil on the sear because it got about 20 rounds down the tube, then I heard a squeek, then it sounded like the piston was slipping off the sear. Use light grease if you decide not to get a new spring. If you like the power (or just wouldn't like to risk anything) you should get a new spring.

Best of luck!

Might have to scratch that...I just ripped her wide open again (I'm starting to do this within half a minute :D) and noticed the spring crept forward, may have caused it to fail to cock. Looks like you might be stuck buying a new spring, sorry man.

It's hard to tell which one it is (I'm not even sure what it's supposed to look like), but it's toward the rear of the gun and surrounds the metal tube thingie....

If I stand the gun upright and shake it, I can feel the spring bouncing up and down...

Definitely not gunna take any chances with it, so I'm gunna send it out to CDT and let him work his magic  8)

Trying to decide between the super and the turbo tune though....

I just want it to be as consistent as possible without worry of this happening again anytime soon....

Do you have 2 mainsprings in your Gamo - an inner and an outer?
