What's your opinion?
« on: October 22, 2007, 05:12:44 AM »
As most of you know I have been working on a few stocks for the Gamo's. I have come up with a very comfortable design, I think I can make it better. I have noticed that on most of the factory stocks, the top of the buttpad is just below the top of the forearm 1-2"max. I have looked at the old black powder rifles and it is 3-6 lower. So my ? is do you think it would be more comfortable to have it say 4" lower, but still have a high comb? So that you could just lay your head over and not have to scrunch down, or let the butt ride high on your shoulder. Let me know what you think and why.
Thanks, Mike

Your read my mind Mike!!! I'd LOVE to have a nice drop to the butt with a medium height comb. This would put my eye right inline with the scope (using medium mounts) without having to scrunch as you say or crane my neck over the comb.

Heck! A CFX done up as a Kentucky Long Rifle would look SWEEEEEET!!! Or maybe a B3 lookin like a Hawken!

A CFX done up as a Kentucky long rifle, that's what I was planning for mine. :o  I didn't think of it before it was cut, but the plwood laminate that I am working on, will get cut and a peice added to drop it some. I have thought about makeing a peice that could be put in place of the rubber pad, that would drop it about 2".

Well Mike, it just depends on if I can see over the comb. I do have and enormouse head and for sure the B-26-2 was impossible for me to sight in a scope and it did not come with iron sights either..:) So as long as 16" square shaped head will fit then I might take a chance.. lol

Really I have not shouldered many civilian powder rifles at all, so I cannot give you any feedback. I do know I like the way most of my air rifles shoulder and the FX Cyclone is awsome to shoulder. That's it..:)

Gene, I was thinking leave the comb at,or just below the top of the forearm. Just move the buttpad itself down, maybe 2" lower, if that makes since.

Have you ever read this:
http://www.ft-designs.com/takingstock.html

Some interesting stuff in there.

I spend alot of time figuring out what is comfortable in an airgun.  Really depends on a few things, like what sort of gun?  You shooting off a bench, or carrying it through the woods for offhand shots?  The above article also talks about the law of averages, are you building for a specific person, or just coming up with a good all around design?

When I did the Talon pistol stocks I tried to address certain issues specific to that gun, like high comb(bottle) means that the shooters arms come at the grip from a much different angle than a standard rifle, not to mention a standard pistol grip.  I tried to make the grip on those with the same angles to accomodate where the arms/hands naturaly rest.  I like to shoot with my fore hand close to the trigger gaurd where the gun balances, so I cupped that area of many of my fore ends.  Unfortunately I couldn't do anything about the bottle/high comb, but I did try to move the bottle up on the shoulder and less in the armpit so the shooters head would be more up and down rather than leaned over the top of the bottle.

Like I said, I think alot of it depends on the gun, and alot depends on the type of shooting you are making it for.  If you are laying across a bench while shooting you want a more upright grip angle, flat bottom fore end and the buttplate right in the crook of your armpit and in a more linear direction to the rest of the gun.  Off hand you might want the buttpad down lower to push the gun up more to help make it sit naturally rather than having to be held up all of the time.  Think about how you shoot, think about what type of stock you are trying to make(bench, sporter, 3 pos, FT, 10M) and then look all over the web at pictures of other peoples stocks for the same purpose.  Not all of the designs you'll find are going to be good, but you'll definately see a trend between models of what works and keeps getting incorporated into everybodies designs.  Not to say there isn't things left out there to be an inovator of, just saying that alot of the key ergonomic features have already been figured out..like round wheels.

Good luck!

Thanks for the link Dano, alot of excellent info. The design that I have been doing, works well from a bench and even better offhand. I think it will work for a good all around design. The first paragraph of that link, describes comfort, as being able to shoulder the rifle, with your eyes closed and open them looking straight down the center of the sites. Thats the way this one is for me. I am hoping to be able to do the same for someone else.

I hope that the one that is going to John, will have the same comfort. I had talked to him about dropping the pad some, but after reading the above link, I think it will be best to leave as is.
