Noob with a few questions
« on: October 26, 2007, 12:37:28 AM »
Hi Guys,

I am looking at entering the field of airgunning. I use to be part of a shooting team for 5years when I was younger playing with .22 anshutz rifles. But have in the past 15 years not really shot at anything.. I am thinking of participating in field target an doing a bit of hunting when the opportunity presents itself.  Al of this said...  I am thinking of getting myself a CFX as a 1st rifle and maybe be able to use it after some tuning to be my mainstay for the near future.. anyways.. this is until the money fairies visit me with cash for a pcp. From the feedback I have read on the net the CFX appears to be a diamond in the rough and once you replaced the trigger she can perform with the best of them. Is my understanding of this correct or should I get something else in the same price range? And also, should I get the plastic or the wood stock? I am worried that the wood my be a bit heavy up front or am I mistaken?

cheers

First off JT, Welcome to the forum. The CFX in my opinion is the best springer available for less than $200 and would be perfect to start with, since it is not hold sensetive. Most springers are hold sensetive and unless you know how to hold it right it will not group very well. I have a couple of springers and the CFX is by far the easiest to shoot consistantly, the others you have to really concentrate to get repetable results. Natchez has them on sale for $169.

I have two CFXs. .177 and .22. They are both brilliant rifles for the money. Both of mine have GRT-III tiggers in them and that is the easiest fix imagineable for the Gamo trigger. Both of my CFXs are very easy to shoot, not hold sensitive.

I would agree with Mike that the CFX is probably the best value in an air rifle for under $200.00. I would have no problem at all showing up with a tuned CFX in .177 with decent glass on it for a FT meet. Jock Elliot proved how very competitive a CFX can be in FT.

The current stable, (arsenal, quiver?): BSA Lightning XL .177, BSA Sportsman HV .22, BSA Ultra .177, CZ634 .177, Daystate Harrier X .177, TAU 200 Senior .177, HW 97 .177, HW 50s .177, HW 30 .177, RWS 92 .177, Gamo 126 MC Super, Gamo Big Cat .177, AR2078A, QB78 .177, Quest 1000 .177, Beeman SS650 .177., Beeman P17 .177.

I don't know really. I had a CFX and it newer performed well enough for me, not even after tuning it several times. Admitted I compared it to my FWB 300, but still the grouping was never good enough to justify the awkward loading port configuration. Still, it's relatively cheap so try it in case you like it. A wast majority in this list think it is a good gun. Another good option could be one of those chinese fixed barrel springer guns with decent power.
If some is good and more is better - then too much is just right.

WELCOME to the GTA JT,

Your choice of the CFX is a sound one, it's not an Anschutz, but with the proper shooter, it will do it's part. As PeakChick pointed out, with the proper scope, glass is always an important factor, as I'm sure you know.

I hope to read your thoughts and opinions on the CFX,after you have had a chance to run it through the ropes. The GRT-III trigger modification is a must, as the Gamo rifles have the worst trigger that I have ever used. The GRT-III will correct that problem in 5 minutes, and make your CFX a dream to shoot !

I wish you success in your entry to airguns ! And hope you stop by here often !

Like the others have said,,,,, welcome to the forum.

As for the CFX,,,,, like PeakChick I also have one in .177 and .22 and they are two of my most accurate rifles.   I don't think you can go wrong with a CFX.

Will be looking forward to your future posts.  And,,,,, if you hunt make sure you post your hunt details and pics in the "hunting gate".  We just love hunting stories and pics   :)

Another Big Welcome JT. As you can see there are a few of us who just love the CFX..:) I am one of them that also has three of em ..hehe. My CFX .177's are dead on accurate. While I love all my break barrels the CFX by far was the easiest to shoot. The break barrels are a challenge and would take a while to find your consistent sweet spot, but not so with the Gamo CFX. And like Peak says, if you buy a CFX, do yourself a Big Favor..:) Get a GRT-III trigger for it and if you wanna shoot FT I would suggest a good tune as well.

Good luck and keep us all posted on your decision.

There are other rifles to consider as well...

Yes, the CFX is darned accurate and fairly easy to shoot well, but the loading is a bit awkward. Breakbarrels are (in some respects) nicer for plinking for that reason. Right now, one of the best deals going is the old Gamo Hunter 440 for $120:

http://natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=GN611005654

Just so you know, the "1000fps" series of Gamo's share the same basic powerplant and trigger. The breakbarrels tend to be a little easier to tune because they don't have the rotating breach complication.

Another really nice rifle is the RWS 94, which can be had for about $200 new or about $120 refurbished. It's a bit more powerful than the Gamo.

A lot of nice things can also be said about the BAM B26, $140 shipped.

The breakbarrels tend to be lighter, which makes them a bit more hold sensitive. But the accuracy inherent in the rifle can be just about as good as anything else.

Be aware that if you get a CFX, make sure the retailer's return policy is a good one. Pyramydair comes to mind (Natchez is also good). Apparently, there's an issue with Gamo's current quality control, and a relatively high percentage of guns are coming out defective. My .22 CFX had its breach locktited closed at the factory!

I also have two CFXs; .177 and .22.  They are also two of my most accurate airguns.  I prefer the rotary breech loading, now.  It takes getting used to, but it isn't awkward.  Just like anything new, it takes a learning curve.

GRT III triggers are a MUST with these rifles.  I nearly sold both of mine because of the pathetic stock triggers.

Some have said they are hold sensitive, some have said they are not.  I hold mine loosely, with nearly open palm and don't force the butt into my shoulder.  Works for me, may not for somebody else.

Don't think I would ever buy a break-barrel rifle, after shooting the CFXs.  Not goin' there.  Nope.  Not gonna do it.

It doesn't pretend to be a 500.00 air rifle, but it shoots like one.

The CFX will be your first fix, then it is downhill from there because it will be lonely. You need then to get 3 or 4 others of differnt models and makes, so it looks like a collection! I had mine tuned by CDT even before I shot it. He has been a great help to me and fixed some things that he had never seen before! Welcome aboard we hold Airguns Anonamous meetings daily at any time you can make it, right here on GTA!

Welcome to the forum JT.  My first was a CFX with a goldfinger trigger.  I absolutely love it.  It is definitely very accurate.  If you're not stuck on springers, the Hammerli 850 Magnum Co2 is also a very good deal.  It has an 8-shot rotary clip and uses the 88 gram AirSource cannister.  I get about 180 accurate shots out of a cannister.  Midsouth has them in .22 or.177 for $185.  This is quickly becoming my favorite gun to shoot.

I should have said though.. I am in South Africa so shopping from all the cheap $$ sites is out f the question for me  :0  But hey, someone has to feed the middle man..  I am looking at about $328 for a cfx Royal (R2300.00) Just waiting for stock. I have seen a royal for $428 (R3000) So yeah, there are reasons for getting the CFX. money does play a role as airguns are not very cheap over here. I will have to order the trigger mod as soon as I have my CFX or rather have confirmation of when I will get it. If there are any south africans online that knows where I can get one for a better price please let me know. And here by us the .22 needs a rifle license. the highest we can go is .20

I will keep everyone in the loop on when I will be getting one..  Anyways.. Anyone know about ARES air rifles? As far as I know they are a turkish brand that makes gamo copies..  Anyone know about the quality of these?

CDT (Charle Da Tuna) is on this forum.  He makes the GRT III.  Just send him an email and ask if he sends internationally.
