Sheridan EB22 Strip to Refinish
« on: October 26, 2007, 11:28:29 AM »
I recently acquired this pistol which is MUCH in need of a re-finish on the Co2 tube/ barrel.

I thought about removing the screws above the trigger & at the rear end under the Co2 tube to see if the Tube/ Barrel came off - but thought better of it !!

Is there any "exploded view/ stripdown of tube/ barrel info i could access anywhere that anyone know of ?

It "looks" like the above mentioned screws hold the assembly together and i then see a plate left side/ rear that "looks" like it would give access to the bolt and its means of fixing into the back end.

Any advice welcome - this sad looking baby needs a birthday !!

I did post this on the crosman forum but zero input - maybe i shouldnt have mentioned my Sheridan there ?

Barrel and gas tube are soldiered together...they don't come apart (welll...not without a torch).   Whatever you are going to do to the finish has to be done to the whole assembly, and it had better not inculde chemicals that attack soldier.  Added to this, will either need to remove the valving  for a total take down (and it's not nearly as easy to do as you'd think) or be very careful not to allow chemicals or abrasives inside the  tube and not to subject the vavling to excess heat.

Advice:
Leave it along and shoot it
or paint it
or spend the $ for a airsmith refnishing (usually a baked on type coating).

While we're on the subject, how the heck do you get the valve out of these guns?  I have one with a bad seal up where the powerlet touches the front of the valve and I want to pull it to replace it.  Are these cartridge valves like the Crosmans?  I assume it goes out from the back, but how?

Thanks,
Dan

Haven't been in a modern one, but belive they run on the same valve system as older Sheridan and Benjamins. The valve doesn't come out as a unit.  Is a complicated arrangement, needing a special tool, and you basically de-gutt it from thge outside.  Old onws whent back together with lead crush-washers, so it's not all that easy a reassembly .

I'll have to look for an EB22 diagram to see how the valving changed...been inside several old Benjamins and Sheridans, but not that gun.

Yep i did see/ get that the barrel/ co2 tube are one unit & Tis only this "assembly" i want to repaint.

Everything below the co2 tube baseline has held its finish fine (looks like its a One- Piece die-casting that houses trigger/ safety and grips) Its the allen key (socket) screws i see above the trigger, & at the back end of this casting, that look suspiciously like they are all that hold the barrel/ co2 tube onto the trigger/ grip housing assembly.

I am confident that with this split i could actually mask up the bolt/ aperture/ etc to just do the repaint.

If anyone knows the answer it would be great to know (sorry but poor finish irritates the hell outa me  - i admit i am a Guy with a BIG eye for detail/ finish !!)

For any bikers out there - this will tell you how sad i am !! Next time you got nowt to do, sit with yr machine and for as long as it takes pulll off every bolt / nut  you can get yr wrench on and lube them with copper slip - it will save you untold grief in the future.

Unless of course you are living in FLA !! I spent 6 weeks there years ago and saw rain a couple of times ! For an Englishman this was a TRUE NOVELTY !!

If you're going to try, then a couple of hints.

Clean/grease free metal....very careful masking...metal temp in the middle 80's to 90F....and try an auto parts shop for paint they'd recommend for exterior auto use.

Am very tolerant of wear I've put on a gun (reminds me of all the good times we've had together) and resonably tolerant of honest wear put on a gun by another's use...am intolearant of abuse wear (pliers marks, scrapes from dropping, marks where a gun has been used as a hammer or pry bar, etc.).
