Best AO Mil-Dot, illuminated reticle for the money?
« on: October 28, 2007, 03:49:20 AM »
OK.  I know getting a somewhat high power scope for the CFX .22 is overkill, but sometimes I've got to play with with targets over 50 yards away.

Does  the inaccuracy of the CFX .22 (I'm assuming not enough velocity for decent trajectory?) at long range make purchasing the scope moot?

I know there are many scope experts here, and inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks!

A little off the subject of your post, Charles, but I was wondering if any of the .22 CFX crowd have tried any of the light weight pellets?  Beeman has 3 that I know of under 14 gr., the Laser @ 13.36, the Silver Bear @ 12.65, and the Match @ 13.75.  I never tried them in .22, but the .177 Silver Bears were surprisingly good in my .177 CFX.  If it was a firearm bullet, I'd call it a semi wadcutter, semi hollow point.  Good pellet, especially at shorter ranges.

Regarding your scope choice, I say get what you're happy with.  I was shooting indoors at 10 yards last winter with an RWS 350 .22 with a Simmons 44 Mag 6.5-20x44 scope.  Turn it all the way down, and it works fine.  If that's still too much, and I happen to think it is for a CFX, get a nice 3-12x scope.  That's what I had on my .177 CFX, it worked for me out past 50 yards using charcoal briquettes as targets.  I had the Leapers 3-12x44 30mm full size, liked the scope, but had too many failures with Leapers to feel good about recommending them.  But there are lots of choices in that power range.  Whatever you decide on, get the best scope you can afford.  I know, it's "just an airgun", but most of the fun comes from hitting what we shoot at.  And being confident we can.  Scope problems almost destroyed that for me at one point, so for me, a cheap scope really isn't.  Good luck, and hope that's some help.

Thanks for all the input, guys, especially the Leapers warning.  Dave, I think your suggestion on the 3-12 on my CFX .22 is right on.  I was a bit underwhelmed in the fps side of it (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=5134&mid=37325#M37325) and was hoping for a bit more fps by increasing skirt size, but it wasn't to be.

Decisions, decisions.  The only other choice in a .22 would be an expensive PCP Condor, and that's just not practical on the budget this time of year.

Wanted to use the illum. scope for night work, with a flashlight attached, though.  Much cheaper than a Condor.  I've got two other BSA red dots.  May just put that on it for night work, but don't want to change scopes much and have to resight all the time.  A laser would be better still.

What do you need a Condor for, Charles?  My Talon SS with the 12" .177 barrel easily exceeds the power you're getting from your CFX.  In .22, it'll push 30 fpe real hard.  And if you decide you need more power later, just get one of the longer barrels.  A stock Talon or SS with a 24" .22 barrel will do 50 fpe, if you really NEED more than that, you probably should be running instead of shooting :-)!  Like you, I was pretty underwhelmed by the performance of the CFX in .22, even compared to the same gun in .177.  Having the Talon at the same time only made it look weaker.  Granted, the one I had was still not broken in yet, but out of the box, it got 15 fpe.  That's what my .177 CFX was doing.  So it went away to pay for the custom valve in my Talon.  Hey, I might just NEED 100 fpe someday, I don't run as well as I used to :-).  Later.

That Talon SS is supposed to be quiet, no? Barrel shroud and all? I'd love to sell the .22 CFX and use the money and holiday money to get a talon...but the other stuff is so expensive to support it.

Is it as quiet as the .22 CFX?

Yes, I'd say at least as quiet as a CFX, and you can get them even quieter without breaking any laws.  As to the rest of it being really expensive, that depends on where and how you shoot.  I tend to do most of my shooting in my back yard, or close to home, so being able to refill a tank away from home is low priority.  I fill from a 4500 psi industrial nitrogen cylinder that I rent from a local gas supplier.  Tank rent is $10 a month, gas was about $60.  I got my Talon the end of June this year, got my tank set up some time in July.  I'm still shooting on the same tank, and I shoot quite a bit.  I got a scuba tank filler with my gun, modified it to work with the nitrogen tank, total cost came to about $100.  Hell, I just put in a pellet order that was more expensive than that :-)!  The other nice thing is that I KNOW it's clean, dry gas going into my gun.  Moisture can be a problem if you use a pump, at least that's what I've read.  So there's a relatively cheap alternative to feeding a PCP.  There is a down side, though.  If you do get a Talon, it won't take you long to realize that springers are too much work for not enough power.  I went from 5 springers to 1 Talon in about a month.  On my short list?  Another Talon, so I don't have to keep swapping barrels around :-).  Be warned, the Dark Side WILL prevail...

Hmmm. I just checked, and you're right.  It shows in stock.  I don't know what I was looking at for 74 bucks...who knows?

They've also got a refurb, but think might be a crap-shoot? http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&src=iDC7&prodID=OSMD41640IRR

Yep! That's the one! Have you got one on a CFX, Gene? I'm a bit concerned that the rotary breech loading might be tricky, with a scope that long?

Charles, I have a Simmons Pro Air 4-12X40AO on my CFX and it is 14" long. No problem with loading port. It sits back about 2" from loading port.  I do not know how long the BSA is though.

15.5 inches sticks in my mind, for some reason.  Have to put the sunshade on after loading the rifle! HIHO! Need to do some measuring.
